    Overdrive Solenoid

Before I took my car off the road the overdrive was not working. When I removed the gearbox I noticed that the small harness from the gearstick switch was damaged so I assume the problem lay there. I have bought a new harness for the gearstick and a new harness for the gearbox. I am currently cleaning up the gearbox before I fit it and would like to check the solenoid before I do this. Would I be right in assuming that if I connect a 12V battery directly to the solenoid I should hear the solenoid moving. Pic below of gearbox showing reverse and overdrive switch.

Is it an A type or J type.
A type is quite a loud click, for a J type you might need to listen a bit more carefully as it is not just a solenoid but a electric hydraulic valve.

J type. Is it better if I remove it. I have ground an old spanner to fit.

Won't really help that much as the travel distance is very small and you might not be able to see it easily,
you should just be able to hear it though. You should also get a small spark when connecting / disconnecting the battery.

If you don't get a spark, check for continuity with a multi meter, if it's open cct then a new one is needed (expensive !).

I'll give a try again tomorrow. Last point was interesting as there was no sign of life at all when I tried it.

Couldn't wait until tomorrow. Checked it again and you are correct. Spark and very light click. Checked for continuity with multimeter and screen shows no change at 0L with a buzzing sound

That sounds ok then, probably an issue with inhibitor switch / wiring / gear lever switch & wiring.

Of note, it is relatively easy to change this solenoid valve with the gearbox in position.
