    Vibration!!

    Hi everyone,

I'm a new member looking for some advice. I've just returned to becoming a Stag owner again after a 30 year break. My car has a vibration at standstill at around 2000 rpm and over. We have tried all the usual stuff, plugs, leads, carbs but we just cant get to the bottom of it. I did notice a post before where someone had the same problem but I didn't see the outcome. My car has the Stag engine and a Borg Warner 35 box.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Roy

Have you checked the viscous fan coupling? Spin the fan by hand it should only spin 2 or 3 blades before stopping.

I have a Kenlowe fitted but so is the coupling too. I did wonder if it might be that. Thanks. Will give it a spin.

Try unplugging the electric fan as well

Worth checking the crank damper while you are in there

other than a visual inspection, how would you check the damper?

viscous fan coupling first, any play at all in the centre bearing and I would get it changed asap

I assumed that the vibration on occurs when you are at a standstill and revving the engine. Does it do it in park and neutral? Does it vibrate when on the road.

assuming viscous fan is not the root cause I might look at misfire causes next; double check the plug leads are in the correct order and all firing correctly, there are some real cheapo rubbish available through online auction sites. new doesn't mean it is any good. what spark plugs and gaps are you using?

                  Hi Richard,
There isn't any play in the viscous but I gave it a spin today and it didn't turn too many times before stopping!

Yes the vibration occurs at standstill in both park and neutral. I do have vibrating whilst driving but I think that is down to the splines on the propshaft and duff UJ's. I have another prop on order for that.

I had all new plugs put in at Enginuity so I'm presuming that they gapped them correctly. I checked the firing order, that was all ok. I do have another set of leads which I will try tomorrow. The car does seem a bit underpowered as even when I put my foot down hard in the rain from standstill it doesnt have enough power to loose traction!!

All of the compression is ok in all chambers so its not that!

I did think that may have something to do with it Phil.

The guys at Enginuity think it may be the torque convertor out of balance but I'm hoping it's not that!

Roy, you say "it didn't turn too many times before stopping". Am not clear - I think we're looking for it to stop within 2 - 3 blade widths. Am I just misreading you?

                              Sorry Jonno,
I misread your message. I thought you said it should stop within 2-3 turns. It probably stops after 2-3 blade widths.
