    Indicator & wiper stalks

Hi, does anyone know if the indicator & wiper stalks from a LHD stag are a straight swap on a RHD stag. I was thinking of swapping them over as I’m feed up keep putting my wipers on by mistake

they are a direct replacement ,but the left hand drive ones are dear and hard to get,,easier to swap yours around it just means the wiper lettering is up side down

Thanks Dave. Rimmer’s have them but I wanted to check if it was practical before I bought them. Thank you

I bought a set of LHD stalks many years ago from Tony Hart, for exactly the same reason. No problem fitting them to the column, but I seem to remember the cable on the indicator stalk needed some fettling for the lights dip/main/flash operation.

I have a RHD indicator stalk on my LHD stag no. 2. It bothers me no end as the trumpet handle is on the top and not on the bottom. having the wiper the other way would really get on my nerves

Swapped mine years ago to prevent squirting when I meant to blow. The fact that the symbols are inverted is immaterial as I never look at them, could always polish them out.

I changed mine (from rimmers) if you remove the harness plugs fitting is simple as the wires slip in and out of the column without taking it apart. take photos and list the wire positions of the switches on the car as (indicators from memory) are incorrectly wired on the replacement switch. I have a motalita steering wheel and found the new stalks a little further away, so have fitted small wedges at the rear of the unit mounting to tilt the stalk towards the wheel.

I just fitted the LHD wiper stalk to convert mine, the indicator stalk just needed a slight bend in the shaft.
Have to be really careful bending the indicator stalk though, otherwise you'll break it.

I want to change the stalks on my partner's BMW Mini - the indicator is on the wrong side!

This subject does wind me up.
Everywhere else in the world, indicators are on the opposite hand to the gear lever (so by the driver's door). UK was like this in the good days (i.e. when the Stags were built). Other RHD countries are still like this - e.g. Australia.
But by the '80s, most cars sold in Britain were of European origin, and the bean-counters would not authorise the RHD stalks for a minority of the cars of a given model (think French and Italian makers, Ford Europe, Vauxhall/Opel, ...). So, in the UK, it became the norm to have the indicators on the left, just because most were designed primarily for LHD. Such was the pressure of 'normality' that Austin Rover in their later years also designed indicator stalks on the wrong side - maybe they had wonderful hopes of selling more cars LHD than UK? Wasn't the Allegro planned to be a European best seller?
I just have to remind myself that the Stag is correct, and my 'modern' is wrong, and when I visit my daughter in Australia, both their cars (Mitsubishis) are correct.
Except, I have just spoken to my daughter; my son-in-law in Australia has just got a new Skoda Octavia (similar to mine) and that is also wrong. Which is going to give them a load of grief, because their Pajero is correct.

Now that’s interesting as I always thought, wrongly I now see that it was an international agreement to standardise for the sake of safety.

Just think of the chaos on the road if somehow they hadn't agreed on the line up of the peddles....... And as far as i've see thats the only part of all the cars that seems to be standard.
Even the gear stick has so many difference's. Just look at the position of the reverse gear !!

It wasn't always that way. Take a look at some vintage and veteran cars - Model T, for instance. Many of them had the accelerator in the middle of the three. And then there are those that have the accelerator (throttle) on the steering wheel.
