    Choke fast idle setting

    The Haynes Manual describes how to set the fast idle then says repeat on the other carb? Mine is a 1977 model which appears to have only the one set up point on the left-hand carb. Were earlier models different ? Also should you set the choke fast idle when hot or cold or does it make no difference. Many thanks John

    Disconnect the links between the two carbs and the fast idle screw is on the opposite side of the second carb. Think of them as mirror images.

      The choke fast idle cam is only on the LH carb.

      Make sure the edge of the cam is well lubricated and that you depress the accelerator pedal when pulling the choke out. Otherwise too much strain can be exerted on the LH choke cable, causing it to break. Replacements are expensive and a PITA to fit.

        From what I understand, adjust the fast idle when the car is already warmed up and doesn't need choke. I haven't got confirmation, but at fast idle the choke isn't doing anything other than keeping the idle high.
        As the choke gets pulled out more beyond fast idle you are making the mixture richer,
        If the engine is cold you will need choke and you will not be able to get the fast idle right. I have a '71 Stag it has an adjustment on both carbs. i undo the RH adjustment and only set fast idle on the LH carb. I do adjust the RH one so it closes the vent valve.

          I would not disconnect any of the links, the adjustment is just on the left carb and they need to be connected together so that they both crack open. As Sujit said, after you have set them double check that the right carb enrichment is fully off when the choke is fully home, fast idle adjusting will not affect that but it’s worth a look.

          I set the fast idle cold, with choke pulled almost all the way, I reason that’s when you need it, but did recheck it when it’s warmed up at the point where it’s just holding the idle up a little, it seemed fine.

            More of a problem with an auto I think but the way I understand it from reading stuff, is when set correctly, and with the choke pushed in to within about half an inch from fully home when warming up but not up to full temperature, the revs are still up a bit but the mixture is not enriched. I suspect that this setting is more of an issue with an auto as you can't dip the clutch to keep it from stalling in the warm-up period at a T junction or something. . Thanks all for your advice. John
