    quill shaft bearing

i have got my diff unit on the bench and taken the front pinion extension housing off and done the reinforcement on it, i noticed that i cannot turn the shaft by hand but turns by putting a socket on the nut. should this turn easy , or should it have resistance, it feels smooth when turning with the socket on it.

Is that with the extension housing connected to the diff, or still separate? If separate, it should turn by hand. Did you leave the old bearing in whilst you did the welding, then fit a new one? It has been known for housings to be distorted during the welding.

hi, extension housing is separate, its the old bearing still in there, it wouldnt turn by hand before i done the welding, its been off the car for a couple of years so i thought just stuck, it needs a lot of effort to make it turn by hand, Maybe its a timely need for a new one ?

I would always change the front housing bearing if it was off the car, as a matter of course. If you're having trouble turning it now, then it will only get worse and it's rather more difficult to change when the unit is installed in the car!

              Try LD parts.

See the other thread currently going about the very same bearing.

Good few decades back, I experienced a quill shaft bearing seize at 70mph on outside lane of M25. Catastrophic damage...and that was just my underpants !

I suspect my bearing was starting to seize ,and I just caught it in time.
