    Gearbox refurb

I'm at the point now where I'm saving up for a gearbox refurb. My garage seems to think that their 'usual' gearbox refurb company would charge about £600 quid.

I just wondered if anyone has any experience of sending gearbox off for a reconditioning, and how long it took/ how much it cost, and are there any specialist people I should be getting in touch with? (Based in Southampton)

    Thanks all!

    Enjoying every minute of it...

I head my BW35 refurbished by Borg Warner specialist. Not sure if yours is an auto or not. Great guys full refurb around £500 more if you have the torque converter done. Been running 6 months now with no issues so far.

Looks like they are currently closed for Covid.

I used them because they actually do the rebuild on site themselves, I had my overdrive rebuilt included but i think they use a seperate specialist for that., all came back looking like new.

{Cant find copy of invoice to check price) Worth an email to them as they are always busy.

I had my diff rebuilt by T D Fitch somewhere Telford area, specialist in Diffs but i think they do Gearboxes too,

TD Fitchett diff was fitted to a customers car, really good quality.

I can never fault the work of Trevor and the lads at Faversham Classics

What is wrong with your gearbox / overdrive?

I had my overdrive and manual gearbox rebuilt by Overdrive Rebuild Services, delighted with the results and they kept all the worn parts to show me when i went to collect it.
The price for the gearbox was around £600, but I took the gearbox out myself. Gearbox went from sounding like nails in a washing machine to being silent. Very happy!
                      Good luck with yours.

I've had 2 overdrive units and gearboxes done by Overdrive Repair services in Sheffield, they are ex Laycock people and have the original tooling from when they used to build them, they do a superb job, the units come back just as when they were brand new. Top service from them in my experience

When was this? I had a look at their website, it says over £1k just for overdirve refurb, and £2200 + VAT for a gearbox refurb!!!

Just used the same link and a TR overdrive box is either £1050+ VAT and the J type is £950+VAT, doesn't actually mention Stag box but apart from the layshaft they are very similar.

You might have been looking at the outright purchase cost, not exchange.

James Paddock list reconditioned boxes for £395 +VAT without the overdrive. Don't know what quality of components go into them, decent main bearings are about £35 each more than chinese crap and good quality synchro rings are dearer too. They list a rebuild kit for £127.50+VAT, the last couple I did cost nearer £200 buying premium components seperately

Currently the layshafts from paddocks don’t fit due to eccentricity. They are working on it though. & are not supplying.
got a lay shaft from wards that just fitted....
all it needs is an extra op to undercut the unused diameter.
in the immortal word of mr. Clarkson...how hard can it be?
                              obviously, harder than it looks.
they all need a lead in chamfer adding imho.
