    Boot lid repairs

Hi folks, looking for some help / advice.

My boot lid is suffering fairly badly from rust, and if I could get a replacement for reasonable money I would, however that doesn't appear to be an option at present. The damage is at its worst down both sides but also has a little along the rear edge. The rust extends nearly to the moulded radii on both sides which is beyond my tolerance / skill set for making an aesthetically acceptable repair panel.

Does anyone know if there are replacement repair panels available for the Stag boot lid, or as an alternative, could the relevant areas from a 2000/2500 bootlid be grafted in instead?

There are boot lid repair panels available, I did my MK1 boot lid about 4 years ago but can't remember where I bought them from

James Paddock list them, both mk1 and mk2, I suspect that is where I got mine

I had to make an end section from the repair panel to the outer edge of the boot lid,i don't know how far you go into making panel sections but my one one was a complicated shape but with patients, panel clamps, the right hammer and a blow lamp i made it all come to shape...in the end!!!good luck but it's not too bad once you start.

Thanks for that folks, but my problem area is the top skin. I would have been happy making a repair section for the underneath, but not the top, ...yet.

A while a go i bought the outter skin for boot lid,it would be nice if just the outter skin was avaiable on it own,i know they say the hard to fit,but if youve got the ability to repair rust and make repair patches, fitting door skins, then boot skin cant be much harder

I too have a similar problem, the repair panels are for underneath and I need one to go along the whole front of the top end (front being where you open it with the key).

I'm no mechanic or welder so just my experience and would be happy to be corrected or be given advice on any of this.

It appears you cannot get a ‘top’ repair panel which I initially found odd as I would suspect underneath the paint on many boot lids would be lurking the dreaded rust waiting to make an appearance, especially under the chrome trim. However, I spoke to a few steel fabricators and they're just not happy to do this sort of repair, they say that due to the boot lid being mainly flat if you weld on a new patch there's a very good chance that the existing boot lid will warp, a risk they're not prepared to take, so understandable or perhaps too time consuming.
I then looked at fiber glass but not for me and then for a new boot lid but they're not manufactured (not yet but coming apparently), not sure of a new boot lid anyway as I feel there may be problems fitting new to old and it won’t sit correct.
I’m sure there are places that can do the repair but not local to me it seems. Tony (25 years hoarding) did say he had boot lids but I wondered if they would be any different to what I have already once the paint has been removed as they too would be some 40 years old, indeed would even they sit correctly.
Fortunately I don’t think the boot lid is terrible so I may have to go down the route of asking my repairer to use a rust converter and then filler (apparently filler adheres better once the converter has been applied).
It’ll just have to be it’s Achilles heel I guess.

Good luck all the same but this is the joy of Stag ownership.

My boot lid was exactly the same on top, after fitting the repair panels underneath i mig welded the rust hole(carefully) and used rust converter,i like you looked into every option as i would have liked ideally a new lid but at the moment boot lids, bonnets and door shells are our biggest hurdle for restorations!

The top of my boot lid was very similar to that, i sandblasted it then migged up the resulting holes.

You will get some distortion but less than fitting a patch if it is just deep pits and not generally thinned out by corrosion.

That looks like a small repair for a sheet metal worker to me. Just my opinion, nothing more. Have done it previously for a living.

I have a pair of nos panels frame and skin. Not assembled. Not needed. But not cheap. Can suit mk1 or mk2 as uncut for lamps. Hockey also has a reasonable one on Facebook.
