I have two spare diff. I removed the rear covers and removed the slide axles. I flushed them both out with fuel. With one I can rotate the internals very easily by hand, the other is much tighter. Neither feel sloppy. Is it normal for a diff to be slightly tight?

There is supposed to be some pre load on the pinion bearings so they should be slightly stiff if nothing is worn, but this doesn't mean to say that the free turning one is knackered.
Some have collapsible spacers, some have shims depending on the year. I find the shimmed ones to be a bit more hit and miss when setting up as exactly the right shims are needed.

Hello Neil,
The stiff one has a castellated nut onto the pinon and I've been told from Terry that this is the early type. The loose one has a lock nut and have been told this is the later type.
Thx. Sujit
