    Shim for differential

I'm in the process of reducing the clunk in my spare diff. I removed the planet gears there is a no. stamped on them 54. I'm on RB website but am not sure what shim part no. this applied too. Does this no. correspond to a shim thickness between 0.051-0.053 or 0.055-0.057?

Another question, the ROM says to fit sun gears and planet gears and add shims to both to obtain zero backlash. Should I replace the sun gear shims with no. 54 and use a feeler gauge to determine what shims I need for the sun gears?. On the sun gears I have a shims and some thing else which looks like baker lite. Does anyone know what this is?
    Thanks. Sujit

They look like discs from an lsd.
don’t recognise them from a std diff

I was talking to Sujit today and it seems that he has a thin metal shims and a flat fibre shim on each of the sun gears, my early one only had 1 flat copper shim each side.

I suspect that the thin metal shim is in fact the shim for the bearing and the later diffs replaced the copper shim with a fibre shim (same thing happened in the MGB)

      Can anyone confirm that?

Yes. Fibre shims were (are?) in circulation, but I'm sure copper ones are available now again (from Chris Witor I believe?) When I did my diff, I'd managed to obtain some original NOS shims and they weren't copper - looked more like a sinter bronze colour.

Edit: I posted this info in the technical section. Oh why bother - even I myself can't remember what's in there!

        The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137

The curved one with 54 on it is a 54 thou planet wheel shim.
(On reflection, I suppose it could be the last 2 digits of the part number. Measure it near the centre to be sure)

Fibre ones are sun wheel shims.

          Both are STD Diff.

          edit:
No, braved the cold & went out to the garage (0 Deg inside) to have a look at the few spares I have.
          2 X 64, 2 X 60, 2 X 52 and 2 unmarked that are noticably thinner than the 52's.
So they have to be the thickness and not the part number.

          Neil.

            OK

Thanks, as Suspected.. maybe someone had been there before and added those extra metal shims? And yes, of course I should have said bronze not copper..

For our American readers the bronze sungear shims are available at Moss Motors also the fibre type.

I’ll go look at the tech section now Drew!

I did a bit more digging. the thrust washer on the sun gears are part no.102801. If you look at Rimmers website they seem to be some sort of fiber material. Chris Witor's website seem to refer new ones made stronger than tufnol so I'm assuming these original fiber looking washers are made of tufnol.
I have a diff from another Triumph, possibly a TR6, and those washers, 102801, appear to be made of copper , or they could be made of bronze. From the photo in #1 posted, it seems like the person who worked on the Stag diff before me added additional shims to the sun gears. Does anyone recall the thickness of what new thrust washers, 102801, should be?
              Regards, Sujit

I have a new & unused couple of those Tufnol thrust washers, just measured them @ 50 thou.
