    ford v6 in the stag

my car is original tv8 ,im interested to know why we dont hear much about the ford v6on this forum, unlike the rover v8, it did not stand the test of time ,was the ford v6 not a good conversion ? i would think they would be economical to run and parts ,servicing cheap !! just interested to know your thoughts about this conversion, im not thinking about doing it ,i recently had my engine rebuilt and balancedat the cost of £2500 ouch !!!! cheers Graham

    Hi

they are a very good reliable engine that only used to suffer from a bit of tapping due to oil apart from that went on for ever, funny you say that ive only seen 2 in the last year in stags.

There are two versions of the Ford V6. The first one was known as the Essex ( 3 litre ) as it was built in Dagenham, this was replaced ( Around the mid/early 70s ) by what was known as the Cologne ( 2.8 Litre ) at this one was built in Germany. The Essex engine was almost bomb proof mainly due to it being originally designed to be a diesel so big end / mains where very large. After a few miles it did have the odd tappet noise and its weak point was the timing gear which was made of some very brittle material, there are all metal types available but despite what you read and hear they do whine due to them meshing on another metal gear on the crankshaft. If you have an Essex V6 and you do not replace the timing gear you do so at you peril as if it lets go the normal fun of valves getting friendly with the pistons. The Cologne engine was better as it was a lot lighter and smother and the later versions have fuel injection. The problem with the Cologne was it had less torque than the Essex. Both engines have their plus points. The Essex will be one of the easiest engines you have ever worked on although it will be one of the heaviest. One description I heard about the Essex engine was it would make a great boat anchor, a bit cruel but you get the idea. The Essex engine cannot be too bad as look at the number of manufactures that used it, TVR, Gilbern, Reliant, Marcos etc. There was some concern about overheating problems ( Sounds familiar ) but this was due to the manufactures making a pigs ear of the installation, this was especially a known problem with the later versions of the Scimitar ( SE6 series ) but this was due to the way Reliant designed the cooling system and had nothing to do with the Engine. If you had a choice go for the Cologne engine as while the Essex was virtually indestructible it lacked sophistication although the torque of the Essex is brilliant. If you had a choice the Rover/Buick engine is far superiour.

Very similar to the original Stag engine; no need to change springs etc. Hurley Engineering made a number of these in the 1980s.

Having owned a couple of Scimitars, I found the Essex V6 to be nice and torquey however, there is absolutely no comparison with the sound, revy nature and sophisticated feel of the Stag engine. I was really disappointed with the engine note from the last Scimitar I had, even with tubular manifolds, after having had a Stag. Perhaps one day I will get another Scimitar SE6 and fit a Stag V8 - bet nobody else has done that....

the sound would be enough for me - a friend has a TVR with the Cologne engine - goes very well but it just makes lots of"noise" - not a lovelysound like the Stag V8 or to be honest the Rover V8:shock:

Just sat next to a scimitar at traffic lights, exhausts sounded naff.It would spoil a stag .The water pump was nice and quiet though.
