Thin or thick oil sump gasket

JP sells a thin and thick oil sump gasket. Any recommendations on one or the other? Is anyone making a silicone one?

    Not seen a silicone one.

I always use the 'thick' version, seems to handle distortions of sump flange better.

Just make sure the sealing flange is flat and tap down any distortion from previous overtightening ts removed.

if the flange is straight and true then thin, if the flange is all over the place then fix that first.

Silicone isn’t correct material... will move about when compressed.

Don’t forget that the thick one will reduce the ground clearance but will increase the oil capacity slightly. Decisions decisions.

... and the additional weight to take into account.

Except, JP calls the thicker one 'OE' thickness.

Original ones were thick, usually off-white in colour. These were unobtainable for many years (I bought some NOS from the same guy at Stoneliegh that Julian mentioned in post 5) and suppliers only sold thin ones. Hats off to the suppliers who have now sourced thick ones as per OE. That is what I have used, and will do so next time the sump comes off.

I just make sure I slow right down for speed humps.......

Last time I bought some, thick OE, I bought 3 (must 9 months ago now) - only needed 1 to do a leaking sump on a relatives car.
2 kept in for future use.
