    5 speed gearbox?

Please don't shout at me if this kind of thing annoys you, but with an overdrive that doesn't work and quite a knackered gearbox, I was wondering if there was any merit in swapping it out for a different box altogether, and going for say a 5 speed manual? I don't have the original engine anyway and not likely to attempt to restore it... have any of you seen/ heard/ done it yourself?

    Thanks team

    Chix,

Has your Stag got a Rover engine?
If it has then the Rover 5 Speed box is a fairly easy swap and the ratios will suit the Rover engine better too..
If you’ve e different engine then I’m not sure....

    Cheers
    Mike

I do not think the Essex V6 ever had a 5 spd behind it but the Cologne V6 did, but I'll stand corrected.

try to get a T5 box, rare as hens teeth as used in the cosworth and mustang, but a great box if you can find one.

Ive got a T5 box, mated to a 3.9 RV8. It is a lovely box, and my variant has a .68 final drive giving 33 mph / 1000 rpm. I bought mine, which came from a 5.7 l. Camaro. off Ebay for not a lot of money, but finding a matching bellhousing turned out to be a challenge. Also the input shaft on it is a chunky beast and finding a clutch plate was difficult. I got one from an American site but had to trim down the diameter to fit the flywheel / pressure plate.
I found the T5 slightly wide in the cars tunnel and had to press out one location by about 15mm to allow it to fit.

The bellhousing is the make or break.

Previously I used an LT77 5 speed which is a rover box which worked well but had crunching issues in second.

              John.

PS RPI Engineering sell new T5 gearboxes, basically for their Rover V8's but they cost about £4.5K.

Sierra 5 speed or LT77 leyland were cheap options a few years back....may not be so cheap now.

You can pretty much make any gearbox fit any engine, it’s just a matter of cost the type of gearbox you want. A few people have been putting Mazda RX86 6 speed gearboxes on the Essex V6’s.

you could always get a semi automatic box and make the car paddle shift if you wanted.

Makes a T&L 4-speed auto seem good value for money.......

Now that is really interesting... Looks like you have to cut away a lot of the RX8 housing to fit the Essex starter motor...

How do you know the gear lever will line up correctly though??

Nah, not interested in semi, I want full on manual. Can't beat that when driving.

                        Not like this...

What one of my my PO's did to the crossmember with a hole-saw and sawz-all to fit a 5-speed..

It took me a while to sort that out!

there is also a conversion to the Toyota supra box that's common in the kit car scene they come with the rover v8 bell housing

thats similar to what had to do toget my Borg Warner T5 WC gearbox into the stag. It did take me also long while to work out how to strengthen the chassis again. Quite a bit fabricating and then having a separate crossmember that ran underneath the gearbox, that also supported the gearbox. That was another reason I fitted a roll cage to strengthen the car yet again. From fitting the T5 gearbox to fit in the TremicT 56 Magnum gearbox, once again neededa bit more trimming to get it to fit. As this is quite a big gearbox. In fact I had to re-fabricate the whole transmission tunnel which a fair bit of it it is bolted on and comes off relatively easily otherwise nothing was going to fit. But the structural integrity of the car is fine as I still have the crossmember go underneath and there’s the roll cage.
As for the Toyota supra gearbox, yep fantastic gearbox whether it’s the W 58, R154 or the 161. They are quite a small box for what they do but the price is now especially as six speed are very expensive. I did have the R154 fitted to the stag behind Lexus engine and that sold for just over £1000.

The other gearbox was very good value for money, and extremely common, was one of the BMW gearboxes. however these have spiralled in price due to the drift boys using them car destroying them and then just replacing them. So demand is outstripping supply and prices have risen.

Whoever did that should be ashamed of themselves - absolutely disgraceful.
