    Oil leak at Speedo take-off

Is it just me, or does this fliipin' oil leak get anybody else's goat? I've fitted new seals twice, examined eveything for scores or marks, but the thing still lets a dribble of oil out of the J Type O/D, which collects in the support bracket and starts to gradually make its way along the exhaust.

Design error? Me being stoopid? , Clean it up and live with it?

    Cheers

    Drew

I think mine has always spotted there.
Annoying, because I spent a lot of time & effort stopping them everywhere else on the box / od.
As I don't use that anymore (electronic speedo for about 4 years now), I thought about making &
fitting a blanking plate, but never got around to it.

Maybe Peter at LD has some better quality seals than some others offer..?

I've got the same problem, had the seals ready to fit for around 4 years now but just not got round to it....

Try fitting slightly larger (in cross section) O rings or a smear of non hardening sealer..
                Cheers Ian A

I think the problem is unfortunately the oil seal which the shaft passes through.

Its not coming down the thread of the bolt that holds the U shape clamp is it?

I have come across this before and found that a previous owner had fitted a bolt that was too long and it broke the end off the casting where the hole is threaded. A smear of sealant on the threads stopped the leak.

If the oil is leaking past the oil seal remove the tensioning spring and replace with a tighter fitting O ring which will grip the shaft better.
                        Cheers Ian A

recently changed one & if it’s the same item, it didn’t have a garter spring. Looked too small for one too.
                          got any photos?

Sorry no photos. When I was working we used to replace the garter with an nitrile O ring because the chemicals we were pumping would dissolve the steel spring, was just a thought.

Like the 'O' ring idea, might try that next time I'm underneath.
