over skimmed heads - metal spraying

There was a interesting article in the club magazine a few months ago on "metal sprsying". Looks like as our cylinder heads get skimmed and skimmed over 50 years - ultimately would be scrap, but they are now salvageable and can be built back up. They applied it in cars SOS last week (to an aluminium sump). For those interested here is an extended version of the process(on cars SOS Facebook page) I wounder how much it costs? I know my heads are heading that way.

I seem to remember about £750 per head

      Ouch!

Never used them yet but what about savershim being bonded to the skimmed head face?

I assume the 3D technology could be applied here, that effectively is spraying using a range of different materials. There is a massive difference in costs between plastic and metal 3D machines but they use this technology for some metal parts on aircraft engines. A head could be built up and the tolerances these machines offer they would not require skimming either, but it is slow and expensive but pricing is dropping as it becomes more main stream.

That said, didn’t I read somewhere that a company was casting new TRV8 heads?

Saw the Car SOS - very impressive outcome, especially as the repaired parts were pretty unique. Stagweber is now offering saver shims in 0.5mm and 1.0mm and very well priced against other market offerings. - bought a couple of 1.0mm for my spare heads which had been over-skimmed. Recommended installation is with the shim directly onto the block (with a bit of sealant) then thick gasket, then head..Also available from Gosnay if you've got a bigger wallet, but both a lot cheaper than that price for metal spraying.
White 1976 build ("Mk2") only a few mods

3D metal printing isn’t possible (yet) to build up a head surface. After the metal has been printed it has to be fused in a furnace.
the spraying process hasn’t been attempted yet on any stag heads as far as I’m aware.
for the moment we are still going to have to use welding or savashims for overskimmed heads.
soctfl has produced a few new trv8 heads previously.
that project has been a mammoth task for a club. Big respect for those who worked on it & still try to progress it.
some castings are still around, needing to be turned into finished items....not easy to get done at all.

low volume heads are possible to get produced with modern technologies involving printed sand cores for casting....3d core models need to be provided.
Example costs would be £60,000-£100,000 for 10 heads.... rough example.

recall seeing a door handle (internal) being made or an old fiat on one restoration programme. A pattern was made, part recast, hand finished & chromed by a gun maker?... seem to recall it cost £800+
