The Good the Bad & the Ugly

Most of us have suffered poor quality parts and hopefully some good ones too.Maybe we can keep this thread going and share our experiences so others can benefit from our experiences, for starters:

I have been interested in S.S tubular manifolds. These are apparently all made by the same manufacturer. Prices are S.O.C Spares £346.63. Tony Hart £380.00. Rimmers wait for it £530.00.

Does anybody know who is supplying the dodgy track rod ends that only last a few hundred miles?

        Hi Guys

Found out who manufactures the track rod ends on e bay here's the address.

        http://www.amsteer.co.uk/

As I am on the engineering trade I will visit them and have look at how they manufacture them and check out the quality.

I letyou all know once I have been there.

Ifitted 2 reconditioned tracking arms with the lower ball joint purchased in July 2006 from Rimmer Bros withnyloc nuts. My stag failed the MOT this year because the examiner noticed that the thread on the lower ball joint of this tracking arm did not protrude through the nyloc, so that the nut did not lock. Not so easy to see for yourself if you are lying on your back under DIY ramps. The problem was solved by using nyloc half nuts, a shorter nut. I now see that Rimmer Bros use a castle nut with a split-pin. I must add that I have had excellent service from Rimmer Bros.

I was told my my MOT tester that the thread shouldprotrude byat least 2 full threads. Is this a general rule of thumb for Nyloc nuts?

I have been searching for standard big end and mains bearings from all the main suppliers and it seems that only 'County' brand are available. I have also been told that Glacier and Vandervall stopped making Stag bearings 10 years ago, anybody know different?

Don't know except that I avoid anything with the County brand like the plague. I've a set of Vandervall mainsin the garage, just need a standard sized crank to fit them too.

                          Hi

Whilst on the subject of quality (or lack of it ) I have just purchased a complete set of carpets (car and boot ) from Rimmers . I usually get all my stuff from Paddocks because I live about two miles away from them ,but because Rimmers have 20% off at the moment thought I would be daft not to get the carpets from them and I must say the quality is absolute c’’p compared with the original

                          So much for a bargain

Send them back and tell them they are rubbish.

I've seen such poor quality newcarpets that I would want to see at least a sample before buying.

                              Hi Bob,
On quality parts, well I have been flogging the various mules regarding substandard parts for many years. Until such time as Triumph owners agree we are taking it in the shorts and demand quality manufacturing inspection standards AND agree to pay the price, we will only be served gar-bage.

                              Regarding SS Tubulars:
There are different manufacturers, different configurations, and definately all substancially different in quality.
I personally know about the units Tony Hart sells because I assisted (in my on garage here in the USA) in their reconfiguration in an effort to fit LHD Stags. Tony buys his tubulars from Phoenix Performance Exhausts, Devon,UK. Without a doubt they are the best quality of the units on the market as these are mandrel die bent for uniform tube diameter, welded in a jig for fit consistency and exibit very high quality welds. (From last check, no tubulars fit LHD Stags as of yet unless they are first modified, as my last measurements never were translated into the production jig.)
The next units I would recommend come from Jonathan Finis of Monarch, also being mandrel bent.
The remaining tubulars on the market for the Stag are bent on a tube bender, distorting the tubes and stressing the metal ununiformly, and the lack of quality control with lack of a proper gas shield during welding are obvious.

It is possible PPE may be at Triumphs Spares Day, along with Rimmers, Monarch, Paddocks, Robsport, SOC Spares Ltd., and several others so you ought to be able to compare them for yourself all under one roof!

                              Hope this helps.
