    New power steering rack

I had a new rack and pump put it the Stag. Does anyone know how long it takes to wear in and lighten up? Thanks in advance. Brett

To bleed the system have the wheels on the ground rotate steering wheel lock to lock a few times. you need to bleed the air out of the system. what I find when you are at full lock is that you can hear a change in sound the pump makes

Having the wheels off the ground makes life a whole lot easier to bleed unless you have arms like Popeye.

Wind it lock to lock about 6 times or so, keep an eye on the fluid level. make sure that there are no tight spots at all when winding lock to lock and you are done

          Perhaps it was a typo?

The wheels have to be on the ground. the torsion bar in the racks control valve needs to twist to let fluid through the system.

Crumbs, that is a new one for me. Have always done that with the front wheels in the air and had no issues.

With the wheels in the air, the torsion bar twists at full lock so in theory it should work, but you must go from lock to lock. The ROM shows a diagram of the fluid travel.

The pinions preload cup is often over adjusted to compensate for rack / bush wear.
only fix for a Dead feeling rack is to get the rack ground , chromed & reground. Or find an acceptable less worn rack.
many recons don’t offer this level of reconditioning.

Today I replaced one of the power steering hoses and a couple of unions admittedly it’s a slightly different pump, as it’s electric, and located in the boot. But it works in the same way. Only reason for doing this was one of the unions had a slight leak, which was enough to lose fluid to the point where the power steering didn’t power steer.

Before I removed any pipework I drain the whole system of any fluid. Admittedly it took quite a while to get the correct seals and unions so I’ve got no leaks. practically all day, as the supplier of the new pipe said no need to use any that sealing stuff as this will never leak. How wrong he was.

When I bled my system going lock to lock with the wheels on the floor it didn’t take that much effort without power steering and the cars got 225 profiles on the front. On the second go lock to lock the system was fully working.

So to answer your original question your new power steering system should be working correctly in about 15 seconds.
