    Hot start problem

Hi all, after 9 years of ownership my car has never had a hot start problem... Until they was "tuned and adjusted" by an "expert"now I have a hot start problem. Could anybody suggest anything that could cause this problem? No float heights changed. Tickover was to fast as well for an auto. Could the balance of the carbs contribute to the problem? Many thanks M
Could an over rich mixture add to hot start problems?

Perhaps your "Expert" should sort it out for you! I don't think it will be be a balance problem though. Do you know what adjustments were made?
Before investigating the carburation, I would check to see that the lead from the starter solenoid to the +ve on the coil, which bypasses the ballast resistor when the starter motor is operating, has not become disconnected. It is after all a "Hot start" device and is something relatively simple to look at before delving in to the Strombergs. If that is working, then mixture settings and other things will need to be checked.
    Mike.

Being over rich can cause hot start problems, it helps to put your foot to the floor as you crank to clear it out. Not sure if a rich mixture setting would do that though, but leaking float valves would, were they messed with?

Someone suggested to me to try the following. disconnect coil. turn ignition on and listen to the fuel pump ticking. it should stop. if not the float valves could be leaking. I too have an auto and think because they run at higher rpm they are more prone to hot start issues. I have hot start issues but have not got to the root of it. another suggestion. is to stop the fuel pump while car is running and let car run dry. then see if it starts.

Thanks all for the advice. Didn't mention that I also had the starter relay fitted to help solve the "click" problem which seems to have been replaced by the hot start problem 🤔

Based on that information I would first go with what Mike (Lingen) said. Check that the coil still has a 12V feed from the starter solenoid whilst cranking. It is entirely possible this has been disturbed whilst the "starter relay" was added. Without the direct 12V feed you will have a very weak spark whilst cranking, which won't help starting.

Many thanks all for the advice. Checked the coil visually and all seems in order.

Roger, could you explain to me how to check the coil has 12v feed from the starter solenoid while cranking? Many thanks Mark

12v bulb on coil with long wires so you can see whilst startimng. 6v dim / 12v bright

Mark, I had this problem and was given loads of helpful suggestions, but the only one that worked - and it hasn't been a problem since, whatever the temperature - was to check the free movement of the carb piston. One of them was sticking.

                    Good luck,
                    Brian

Just a thought, what could cause the piston in the carb to stick?

Usually it’s a build up of stuff on the piston or
carb body bore. Remove piston clean both piston £ bore with a soft cloth & fuel or carb cleaner.
check the diaphragm for thinning / splits.
