    Broken stud bolts in heads

Today we started to perserne a spare MK1 engine we have bought.

So this is what we have, 4 of 5 bolts are broken off close above the head on one side. Everything Else is removed. Pistons are Still in on that side of course...

I had hoped i was able to get a gap to use a hacksaw on the bolts but the head is stuck to the block.

    Any ideas?

I used a couple of pieces of angle iron bolted to the inlet manifold and a bottle jack in between seemed to work ok.

If the crank is still in, can you use the rope trick? It certainly worked for me - gave enough of a gap to use a hacksaw blade and leave about 10mm of stud in the block, then I welded nuts onto the studs and wound them out. No damage to head or block.

I think the engine needs to be in the car for the rope trick

Block is bare except 3 pistons. I tried welding nuts to the studs, they just broke again. I have been able to lift the head just a little by hammering the chain guard (protected by a block of wood of course).

Thank you, I live in Norway so not exactly close! The solution looks good, although I would have to bolt the other head back onto the block.

seeing as the pistons and crank are off it why not use a suitable sized piece of wood down the bores and a heavy hammer and drift the head off the studs. as long as the valves are closed they wont suffer any damage.

Pictures shows pistons still in on the side in question
once had this on an engine that was out.
it had been rebuilt & not run for many years & the gaskets breached.
I left it with diesel soaking down the studs for 3 weeks topping up every week. It let go eventually.

The 75x75 angle iron plates can be made to a drawing that is available in the files section on Facebook triumph stag fan club page.
looks like it’s too late to use the rope trick now, which can / has / does actually work.

The cam drive sprockets look detached from the cams to me........

The sprockets were detached I had to remove the timing chain in the end to get more movement. Sure there are easier ways to get the head off but it worked in the end with no damage done thankfully.
