    A Frame Rust Repair

    Hi There,
What would a repair of this nature cost?
I'm looking to get all four wings replaced both inner and outer so that will expose this area of my car and if this corrosion is discovered what would it cost to repair on top of the wings etc.
    Thanks

I had to do those on my car, and as far as I know there are no repair panels made for this area.
It took me 5 hours a side to open up, remove the grot, manufacture infill panels and fit.
I'm self taught but, but reasonably skilled and I don't think that time is too far out. You have 2 panels to make, the inner then outer.
Once they are made and the area is closed off you need to come up with a method of coating the metal. I drilled small holes in the top of the A post to let in a dinatrol wand to soak the whole area, both sides of the inner panel.
If you can find the post 'here's one I started yesterday' you can see my attempts at doing the work.

    John.

Have you checked on the availability of all four wings before you take them off?

I'm going to get the work done at EJ Wards most probably so sourcing wings etc won't be a problem. I was curious as to what the actual figures are. Thanks for your replies.

Maybe they might have an idea of the costs if you ask them?

              Peter,

I have just been through a similar experience. One thing to bear in mind is once you get the front wings off, you might find problems with the sills and other areas also. I started with Wards asking for two new front wings. By the time I finished I have had two new front wings and inner arches, two rear wing 3/4 repair panels and inner arches, two new sills as well as two new front outriggers, two front floor sections and new rain channels as well as front valence and the top panel in front of the bonnet. There were also several small custom patch pieces welded in to cover small rust patches. Then of course it made sense to respray the car, so in the end it was £14K.It was going to be about 3K when I started! So just beware and keep control of what you want to achieve. Wards are great, but they are perfectionists and have high standards for their work.

Hope that doesn't put you off! Good luck.

              Mike

                  Hi Mike,

I am already looking at getting all four wings both inner and outer plus sills etc all repaired at the end of the year so know it's gonna be a big one. Was just interested what this might cost if anyone has had it done. Have written to Wards but not heard back yet.

£14,000 for panel repairs/re-spray. That the same as the cost of a good Stag.

you buy that Stag and save £2000 and still have your Stag.

Wards may be good, but I doubt there that much better than any other welders/repairs.

I am surprised that you can still get original complete rear wings now. I bought a remanufactured rear wing for my restoration and the bodyshop advised me to repair the existing wing with new arch repair panel s because of the quality of the complete wing which had been made in two halves.

You must define what a good Stag is. I guarantee that unless you buy a Stag with a complete photographic history of bodywork restoration you will eventually end up spending around £14k. Labour costs are horrific now and I can confirm that I spent a lot more than £14k on my restoration and I did the strip down and rebuild myself

I know I’ve spent possibly nearly £25000 on mine over the last 20 years getting it to where it is now. I know my Stag is not everyone’s cup of Absinthe .But out that I think there only been about £600 on labour, plus’s the odd bottle of whiskey. If someone said it was going to cost £14,000 to keep it on the road I would possibly think I would be an in-economic repair.

Well you know what they say, a fool and his money are soon parted.

I agree, it would have made financial sense to sell my Stag and buy a fully renovated car. But that is not what owning a Stag is about for me. It is about the fact I have owned it since I was 21 and it has been part of my life for 42 years. I have rebuilt the engine, gearbox, diff, power steering rack and virtually everything else. I have even re-sprayed the whole car myself after doing some body welding repairs back in the 80s with a Halfords stick welder. The one thing I can't do though is weld to the same standard as Wards. It was definitely more than I wanted to spend and, to be honest, the whole process was somewhat out of my control. Mick (Ward) has his standards. But I don't begrudge supporting a business staffed by genuine enthusiasts. The result is amazing. The only problem now is that I am worrying about getting the first dent!
