    Spot weld drill

    Hi All.

I've been told there is a special drill to drill out spot welds, is this correc?

If so, where can I get one? Who makes them? What size? Are they expensive? Whats the meaning of life?

    Cheers

        Frost sell two types.

Both work but I prefer the cobalt drill.

Any decent High Speed Steel Drill will drill out spot welds. Low carbon steel doesnt harden on welds. A centre punch will locate the drill better than that thing because there will be something there for it to centre on.

The reason a spot weld drill is better is that you only need drill thru one thickness ( the one you want to remove) leaving the remaining panel untouched. You don't even need to centre punch it first has they have a small point to keep the drill centred. Have used them plenty of times and they are much better then a normal drill which you cannot avoid drilling into the remaining panel. - Alan

Agree 100% one of the best "tools" I bought when doing the bodywork was a spot weld cutter from Frosts.

I can only speak of the frost spot weld cutter as listed by redstag.

I bought mine over 10 years ago and use it occasionally to remove the odd panel. AsI recall I have removed about 6 or 7 wings as well as various other panels on numerous cars, and I'm still using the original cutter. Just use a slow speed and plenty of lubricant and it cuts very nicely, no disortion or damage to the 2nd layer.

I would recommend getting just one of these - or get the set with some spare cutters at 19.50.
