    Alarm & Immobiliser

    Hi
Can anyone give a recommendation for an alarm and an immobiliser that I could purchase that would suit a Stag, thanks in advance.

Never done a comparison - my car was fitted by the guy I bought it from with a Toad immobiliser. This has a transponder dongle that sits on the key ring and "talks" with the immobilser via an aerial loop fitted under the steering column cowl by the ignition key. There's a red LED that flashes reassuringly on the top of the cowl. It's been on for ~20 years and still working fine. Doesn't even seem to drain the battery much, even with a 2-month layup. Still available I think.
White 1976 build ("Mk2") only a few mods

I had a Cobra category 1 alarm and immobiliser fitted in October 2008 that had to be replaced in December 2014 when it stopped working. Last year I had to hotwire my Stag to get it to the garage for its service and mot. Will need to get it replaced yet again! Needless to say, I don't recommend them. Regards, John. P.s. it cost 310 then 200 pounds!

Yeah, my red Stag was fitted with a Cobra by PO (2010), after a few years it started to go off and drain the battery. Most people in that era had them.

        Heard of Cobra but Toad??

I've had a Toad system fitted to my Stag for nearly 20 years. It hasn't caused any problems and works well; and the car hasn't been nicked!

Hi - You may wish to note my own experience with the ignition immobiliser fitted to my Stag.
Twenty years ago when my Stag was back on the road after a rebuild job, I though I should have an immobiliser fitted by a specialised Auto Electrician outfit. The recommended immobiliser was the 'Piranha' THMA 400 tochkey immobiliser. I was wet behind the ears and never thought to ask questions like:- how long will it last? what happens when it goes wrong? and does it default to ignition 'on' or 'off'?
So, twenty years later in Feb 2020, I'm hacking down the A3 to a Stag meeting (where else?) when the ignition cuts out dead without warning. I coasted across into the slow lane and so luckily for me there was a pull off the road lay-by which I managed to roll into. How lucky was that? I knew it was Piranha system at fault as I had a red flashing light (which means 'immobilised') and no amount of presentation of the special key would re energise the ignition. My insurance company sent out a breakdown technician and after over two hours the car was towed home.
Be aware this could have happened in one of our new 'Smart' motorways and could have been hit by traffic from behind. I'm told the relays on mine are past their sell by date.
So, I think you need to find out about which way the immobiliser defaults to and whether, in view of Smart motorways, you're happy about it!
              Tony.

                .
Very true and is why the Triumph designers, in their wisdom, did not fuse the ignition circuit as it would introduce a potential weak point in the circuit.

However in our wisdom, we often introduce a potential immobiliser with a name ending in spark, not wishing to scare you but think about it please.

wow, some very thought provoking replies, many thanks to the replies and pm's.
I do have a steering wheel disclock so will stick to that for now, even though I've read here that they are sometimes not without their own issues.

I removed my annoying immobiliser which sometimes cut the power to my starter motor(not good on an auto) and i have gone down the hidden switch route on ignition and fuel wiring which gives some piece of mind but it is always going to be a problem finding a decent alarm which will last.
