    LPG Conversion

Now the price per litre of unleaded has reached £1.04p or £4.72 per Imp gallon:shock:and the Stag V8 only does 22mpg I was considering have a conversion to LPG done.

Has anyone got experiance of doing this or had quotations for the cost of a conversion?

I don't know if it is possible on a Stag or where you would put the tank etc so if you some pics please post them.

    Hi Stuart,

I did look into this some time ago and discovered that despite green taxes on just about everything, the boys in power have removed all grants for conversion.

Given my mileage per annum, I'd be much much older before payback based on about £1700 that I was quoted at the time. I'm sure it must be cheaper now and I'd still be interested if it was. The tank would fit nicely in the spare wheel well and I looked at a professional outfit that spray run flat gunk inside your wheels, much like the stuff from Halfrauds but guaranteed to keep the tyre inflated at 70mph for quite some time and miles, cost about £20 per wheel so not bad value considering.

Interesting subject now that petrol is at the price it is, and it will not fall either. The price now is reflective of the barrel price increase a few weeks ago, so look out, there are more rises in the pipeline (excuse the pun) and the government increases as well. Look forward to the £1.2o litre soon.

      Hi Stu

i reckon as well the maths does not work out.

also where were you planning on putting it?ie the tank, but my main point is that living 45 mins from cross channel ferrys i nip across the water fairly reguarly, and get the feeling shipping co's and the tunnel don't like lpg travelling on them.

I have heard that alsoso why is it they let camper vans and caravanson ferryswhich carry bottled LPG and even have those diamond shapedstickers advertising the fact plastered all over them (strange):?

        Cheers,

          Hi guys

I run a Bifuel Volvo as well as my Stagand as far as I am aware, it's only the tunnel that have travel restrictions on lpg ( they don't allow it!) My local lpg supplier/fitter reckons he can supply and fit to a Stag for about £1650. This would be with a 45 ltr donut tank (40 ltr usable, approx 9 gal) so averaging 23.5 mpg on petrol, 20 mpg on lpg (you average approx 10% less mpg on lpg) gives you a lpg range of 180 miles. At the moment i am paying 51p a ltr for lpg so thats £20.40 for 180 miles, £20.40 will buy you about 5 gal of petrol so thats nearly120 miles. You don't have to be good at maths to see that you would need to do a lot of miles to break even.

          Regards Andy S

Steve I thought it was only me who had this sort of good luck!:?

Petrol & Diesel now £1.06p per litre here, costs more to deliver so they say!:X

LPG looks not to be the answer as costs will take to long to pay back, might have to have the valve seats triple angle cut as this will increase the efficiency of the engine and not cost to much to do.

I can then ditch the fuel additive and use pure unleaded which will save a bit of money each fill up.

                Stuart,

If you think this might be necessary, then ditch the additive anyway. The Stag engine was designed to run on unleaded. As long as the exhaust valves are to OE spec, then you are OK. Even non-OE valves will suffer unleaded for many thousands of miles of normal use. If you start having a misfire caused by burnt valves, then you will have to lift the heads then anyway. So why do it prematurely. You never know, you may not need to do anything at all.

OE spec exhaust valves are the same as fitted to the TR7 and will have 155524VL engraved into thestem. I only recently replaced the heads on my car. The LH head had done 60,000 miles in my ownership with the same valves as above. The RH head had been rebuilt in '92 by one of the large suppliers using 'cheap' valves. These took 25,000 miles to burn out. These were replaced with 'proper' unleaded valveswhich were still in place 35,000 miles later and showing no signs of wear.

                Dave.

I can sort of see why that guy put the 1.8 Ford diesel in to that "rat" car now - bet he laughs at the fuel pumps but cries at the lack of Stag Song - maybe a tape recorder and a big loudspeaker in the boot could cure the latter problem.......

This is the diesel I want. 320bhp and 530ft/lb in a narrow V8. This is GMs new baby, designed by my Brother-in-Law now based in Michigan. It will fit anywhere a small-block petrol V8 will fit. Revolutionary design. No external manifolds. Everything, including the turbos is in the Vee.

530ft/lb of torque would twist the poor diff off the chassis
