    Can a diff stop whining

My Stag for 20 years always has a diff whine, but this last year. I can't hear it. It would occur at speed around 70 ish and above, and when I'd be coasting. I'm losing oil from the quill shaft and will be taking it off the road soon.
So can a diff stop whining?

They go quiet just before they die.

reminds me of the old quote about Nigel mansell: What's the difference between Nigel and a jet engine? The jet engine stops whining when the engine is switched off

Many years ago....I think about 8 years, I read a thread here about the quill shaft bearing whining, one member went as far as saying his diff sounded worse then a Banshee giving birth ! Mine was whining as well so I followed instructions posted by one of the guys and changed the quill shaft bearing single handedly. First time I took on such a job.

You know what??? The diff did not stop whining.....what made it stop was ....not sure but I think it was Bob Heritage saying to add a bit of molylslip to the diff oil.
It stopped the whine for a few years, it came back but was not all that bad, so I added a bit more molyslip and it went away again.....honest.

The mansell / Murray Walker f1 era was exciting. Seemingly never to be repeated.
Toby Moody gave a recent commentary on a Suzuki 1100 Hillclimb car at Shelsley though. Most enjoyable

Agreed! A good old fisticuff between Senna and Prost or Schumi was way better than "I pressed my thumb on one of the switches which was only 5mm away from another control and, all of a sudden, my rear brakes stopped working and I couldn't steer the car." That stuff should be reserved for Play Station.

Gone are the days when an Escort diff exploded on a Rally Stage, so they searched the car park to see if there was a Capri anywhere and agreed with the driver that they could have his diff to finish the stage!

I have had my Java Green beastie since the 2nd April 2015 since when I have replaced the diff twice. Both diffs were secondhand, and the current one is now winning and singing away when my foot is eased off the throttle. Had it not been for lockdown and the French making us quarantine on landing on their soil, I would have been heading to do the major Alpine passes with a small group of classic cars.
My local Stag specialist advised that he would be unhappy my undertaking such a trip without replacing the diff with a new one. Ok to do a hundred or so miles around here, but not a long trip driving at 130kph on the French motorways across to Switzerland. But I am told the diff whine is far from uncommon.
I will acquire a new diff probably from the brothers when I next see a discount code!

Try TD Fitchett, if you ask nicely and have the folding stuff (remember that?) they might even forget to charge the VAT
