Engine Number Double Stamp

I finally found the engine serial number on the back of the engine after cleaning the area with some emory cloth. There isn't much room for my hand so I did the best that I could getting the rust knocked back. The number looked like LE21400 but the Heritage certificate shows it as LE21300. I used my recently acquired borescope to capture a photo in order to get a better look and as you can see, Archie, or Clive, or whoever was assigned to stamp the engine block made a bit of a mess of it.

Reminds me I must have another go looking for mine, should have done this when I had the inlet manifold off, but that would have been far to easy.....

When I got my heritage certificate it was one number out, I questioned them and they looked at the records again and came back with the same number I had on the block. They re-issued the certificate.

I guess the records were hand written and sometimes hard to read..

My problem is the DVLA log book has the engine number as LFHE on it, checked with DVLA and that's the record they have. Now if I find my engine number then get a heritage certificate will I spoil my original engine fitted dream......

For some reason you have the actual number missing, the number should be LF 1234 HE LF means stag engine then the actual number and HE for high compression engine. USA had LE as were lower compression. When you find the number inform DVLA that has been recorded incorrectly at some point.

A friend had a rover P5b from 1969.
its vin was one digit out compared with the v5
a g had been written as as a c.
DVLA were no help, and the mot tester refused to continue the test.
had to make a new vin tag in the end , after 4 attempts to correct failed at dvla.
Modern versions of records seem impossible to correct.
The heritage records can be missing & or inaccurate too.
