I am doing this job at the moment, most of the car has a thin layer of Ziebart which responds well to a scaper and a paraffin soaked rag but the wheel arches have thick underseal. The best method I found is a gas blowlamp and a palette knife. The secret is just to soften the underseal and not to set fire to it.

I tried with a knotted wire brush like the one shown but with my underseal just built up on the brush and was a bit noisy and dangerous. - Alan

Hot air gun and scrapper works best anysort of abrasive method will clog up in no time and spread stuff eveywhere. Trick is to warm enough to make plyable but not set fire !

Clean off residue with a solvent like white spirit/parafin horrible job !

      Have fun

Using a paint stripping gun and scrapper is great apart from the fact that hot melted underseal drops on top of you:shock:. It hurts. Unless of course you have a turnover jig

Here is the process I used on my car.

heat gun and scrapper (very smelly:shock

paint stripper left soak in for an hour

more paint stripper combined with wire wool and a scrapper (horrible:shock

knotted wire wheel attachments on a grinder (every noisey:X)

        emery discs on a grinder

resulting in bare metal as seen in the photo

final dessing in the awkward corners with a Dremel as suggested by Kryten.

        washed down with panel wipe

        the Jenolite rust convertor

then black epoxy mastic paint from Rustbuster

Next stage is to apply red oxide primer, undercoat and finally top coat of chosen colour.

Well what a horrible mucky job, got one inner wheel arch and half the boot floor done, dust and muck everywhere, not looking forward to spending another few hours under the car tomorrow but now Ive got this far Ive got to continue.

Wheel arch had body colour underneath the underseal, under floor area has hammerite which is in really good nick considering its been on there 20 years.

Some areas under the wheel arch have gone down to bare metal and Ive only found a couple of bits of surface rust which Ive treated with rust killer.

Bought some red oxide etch primer which I was goingto use as undercoat followed by some coats of Rustoleum Combi Colour. I notice Bruce has used an epoxy mastic rustbuster paint, Is it best to use this or will the red oxide followed by Rustoleum suffice? The Rustoleum info says it can be used on bare metal but I thought using a primer would give better results.
