    Final start.

    Hi all,
Finally started the Stag after Julian set the timing.
It had a loud screech coming from near abouts the timing chain area. I have put on the rebuilt carbs and removed the Alternator belt and Power steering belt to see if it eliminated the screech.......it has! Happy days, I thought it may have been more serious.....so what is this screech?
The engine is running on choke but when I take it off choke it stops
Anyhow next step I am about to put on the alternator belt and see how it goes, prior to that what shall I do about it stopping when I take it off choke? Adjust the carb linkage rod?

p.s sound quality is notgood but it sounds super....Stag burble rules!

    Great! It runs, well done!

The carbs probably need adjustment, try screwing in both idle screws equally to get it to idle then set the mixture and balance them, it’s probably all off at this point. The carb linkage is disconnected while you balance them, it’s only once they are adjusted that you reconnect the linkage and adjust it.

For the screech: if your alternator is in the original location, check that it's fan is not rubbing against the pipe for the lower radiator hose.

Thanks for replying. The Alternator has been relocated to the otherside top. Incidently the earthing was not up to standard, I have now rectified that then started engine again....could it have been bad earthing? Also prior to it being earthed properly, the engine, espeicially the cam covers were getting very hot but after I earthed it properly the overheating dissappeared.......strange?

I have seen throttle and choke cables badly damaged by heat due to poor earthing as the current will take whatever path it can from alternator casing to battery negative, if that was somehow via the cam covers (metal braided fuel lines?) then they could get hot.

It couldn’t earth through the rubber engine mount!
