    Coolant in Vee

Hi, many moons ago I fitted Stagdads Water pump to my Red Stag, there was good advice on how to put back the manifold with gaskets.
I have found coolant at the back end of the manifold...only a little but would like to address this.
Presumably it is going to be coming from the manifold it self (gaskets).
What is the possibility that it may be the pump leaking?
Since its been a very long time ago I took off the manifold to fit the external water pump, I cannot recall which bolts or other diffeculties I would face taking the manifold off.....any suggestions to make it easier will be appreciated.

    p.s...
Sorry got posted by mistake in tecnical section earlier....

I think this Rimmers video should suffice....

If you have the Stagdad water pump kit fitted then the original pump is blanked off (I have the same kit fitted)

Unless the pump cover gasket is leaking then it points to the manifold leaking which is more likely, anyway you can get a look under the manifold to trace back any puddle?

Before I converted mine there was a small leak from the manifold that was cured simply tightening the bolts, later on the pump gave out so it all came out then.

It’s on a different car. suki had one before.
the current car is running a triumph pump.

So, what happened when your pump gave out? And what caused it?

The most common cause is wear of the pump gear resulting in loss of mesh. Pump stops rotating and engine overheats.

Happened to my first Stag about 15 years ago on my way to Brooklands. Fitted a new pump and it was fine afterwards. Rebuilt the pump on my current Stag when I did the heads in 2014, but there has always been that nagging doubt (Stag Paranoia), so I converted to Stagdad pump earlier this year. As it happens, the original pump was perfect when I took it out!

It was the infamous Stag coolant leaks.....
Each time I drove the car the coolant needed to be topped up, I found myself driving and keeping an eye on the temperature all the time. I could see some water in the vee but it was not easy to see where it was from so went for the first option which was the inlet gaskets. To be fair I think they were leaking as well, but it took 2 or 3 sets being replaced before I ended up with the Payen type and the right sealant and method of fitting.

However it was still leaking, the gaskets slowed it down, but knowing what I do now it was the water pump seal wearing out and it was getting worse. The way I spotted it was getting the car on a level surface and checking there was no water in the vee, it's not easy but there are a few places that you can get light into to see, remove the air box, check it's all dry and start the engine and get it hot.

I then switched the engine off and lay across the engine with a torch and could see water and managed to trace it to the front of the engine, I could also see that neither of the front inlet gaskets were the cause, they were dry. These days I have one of those endoscope cameras, in fact they do cheap ones on eBay that plug into a laptop USB port and that would have made the job easier, but where's the fun in that....

So in bits again and pulled the pump out, seals were worn, even went to the trouble of getting the pump underside machined and a ceramic disc fitted to protect the seal but never fitted it because it just seemed a weak point I was putting back in. I then found the Stagdad external water pump kit.

I know people like to keep Stags standard, but for me the water pump design is one of the engines weak points and where it's placed is not good either, smalll drop in coolant and nothing gets pumped round. Lots of steam and can get expensive.

The kit is a good compromise, moves the pump location low on the engine, it's external so can be replaced easy, does away and seals off the old pump and it can always be changed back. I've only just got my Stag up and running so only a few miles on it so far, in that time I found the fan VC was shot and replaced that. If you have one fitted make sure it is good, I didn't know what resistance it should have but it should feel stiff to turn it, mine span free...!

              Hope that helps.

I can recommend the stag dad external water pump been running it for over a year now and no issues, touch wood.. I used core plugs rather than the bung provided the seal the old water pump holes up. Fingers crossed no mor water pump leaks.

I would just try the bolts first, manifold gaskets do compress with time, though I find they generally only need tightening once unlike the head gaskets

That is bad luck Glenn. A couple from Devon got 4 miles from their house when the oil warning light came on. Went home and changed it for their MX5. John and I had better luck and are parked up for the night 1/2 hour from Silverstone.

Took off the Inlet manifold, this afternoon, the gaskets were shot, also the pump casing bolts were loose with only one thin gasket on it
