    Windscreen refit

    Hi Guys,
Following a wet weekend, Friday in the Cotswolds in particular, I realise that I need to have the windscreen rubber replaced. I have tried locally but nobody seems to want to touch old cars. "They take too long", they say. Has anyone a recommendation as to who may be worth contacting. I guess it's going to have to be a national company. We are in North Wales.

    Thanks in advance,
    Brian

You said your windscreen is leaking, if the rubber seal has not split or cracked you can buy windscreen sealer, its a bit like silicon, lift the edge of the windscreen rubber and squirt the sealer all the way round the rubber, the main areas where they leak is the corners.

        Thanks chaps,
I've had a quote from Autoglass of £180 if I take it to Chester and provide a new rubber. Literally no one else is interested.
There looks like there has been various attempts to add sealant in the past, I'm not sure adding more is going to be the answer.
It's interesting that when I asked RH who they use for windscreen claims, the company they tend to use directed me to their nearest branch who said they didn't have the experienced staff to work on old cars. Which begs the question, what would happen if I had a smashed windscreen?
Just a foot note, if you live down south, Robsport told me that they do have a specialist fitter they recommend.

        Regards,
        Brian

Its pretty easy to fit the windscreen, if you look up old threads on ' how to do it ' I am sure you will be surprised how easy it is. I did mine and just asked a friend to help me lift it in.

Fairy liquid and a plastic material coated clothes line did the trick.

            Took 1/2 -45 minutes

give my cousin a ring, hes a mobile windscreen fitter with his own business, one of the few people who doesnt mind doing stag screens and getting all the chrome trim to fit nicely, done mine last weekend,

              Richard @ 07393898390

personally i wouldnt attempt to remove it myself, as i did when my cousin was busy and cracked the screen, costing alot of money, leave it to the pros

Are you sure that the water is coming around the screen and not through the wiper spindles?

Stag screen I have done myself but have used these chaps for Range Rovers https://avgwindscreens.co.uk/

very good but likely you will need to provide the screen rubber and they may not be able to refit the stainless trim! Which to be frank I invented new swear words for. That was years ago, I subsequently found that they distort and become impossible to fit!

My local fitter who works for them is old school and has worked on all sorts. MG Midget is the one that he is tempted to chuck a sickie for, he said the Stag screen was a swine but only because of the stainless trim, the screen and rubber fit is usually fine.

Replacement rubbers, yes hmmmm, they all seem to split around the top corners after a short period of time.

When the screen and rubber come out you may find rot in the lip, that'll be where the water comes in

Get the rubber from Stuart at SOC Spares - its the Baines one but cheaper than direct to Baines
Paul - 3 projects, 1 breaker - garage built and housing 2 white Stags. One runs, one doesn't

Just cut the rubber to get the glass out - easy, obviously new rubber is required.

Screen fitting is easy, it's the stainless trim that's the nightmare. I've done 3 of them, took just over an hour to fit,
with a few more hours for the trim. On one of them took neary 2 days ! for the trim.

Mine leaks as well, get a puddle in each footwell if left outside in the rain, I'll replace the screen rubber when time comes for the respray. I'm not tempted to use sealant as I'm pretty sure water gets in at the top as well so it has to work it's way out somewhere.

Thanks SHL 565S, I've spoken to your cousin. Although he lives in Bromley, he may be coming to North Wales, so let's see.
However, during the day I've found someone via some James Paddock contacts that can do it in Chester, so if your cousin can't make it, I've got a back-up.

                        Thanks for your help.

I paid quite a bit for the trim, took it home and like a fool thought you just clip it in and its done and dusted in 10- 15 minutes.
You don't want to hear expletives in the Indian vernacular...they are gross!

                            An update chaps, and chapesses.

Via a PM from a member I was eventually put in contact with a guy in Manchester. He came over to North Wales today and refitted the screen with the new seal I'd purchased from Robsport. He is purely mobile and will travel to most places.
First thing to report is that the seal was a very good fit, apparently not all that are on the market are. Secondly, this guy is good! He knows his stuff where fitting Stag windscreens is concerned. The job looked to be first class, I now await a wet test but am very hopeful of a dry foot-well.
PM me if you want his details.

                            Cheers,
                            Brian

                              Useful info.
The trim usually puts up a fight.
Ive done a few, but wouldn’t volunteer it as a service.
of the 20 minute brigade, there’s none that post a video to help others!…. Maybe it’s pub-talk?
salty washing up liquid is the wrong thing to suggest using…. It might work, but also aids corrosion.
