    no ign light, no charging

Pull the small wire off the alternator and with the ignition on there should be 12v measured between earth and the end of this wire.
If there is, probably the alternator faulty.
If not you need to trace it back, but if you say the ign light is coming on, this earths itself through the alternator to allow the alternator to create a magnetic field to start charging.

    Been there....
Getting the Stag back and working after a long rest in the garage..... I've moved the alternator up top after fitting an external water pump. Noticed that the battery is not charging but also the IGN light does not come on before starting. Checked the three wires at the alternator, the large brown wires are live, smaller wire

      hi

tested small D wire - there is 12v when ign on (motor nut running).

Thanks for this advice and link! - i will order the alternator now.

You might want to hold off ordering a new one, lots of people have had issues with new ones as they are cheaply made, not all, take a search through here.
Alternators are not that complicated, diode pack and brushes and that's about it, if you are taking it out, open it up and have a look inside, they have a misserable life in there, could just need cleaning up.
But a diode pack if the brushes are still good are cheap and easy to fit, agin have a search on here.

read your posting in detail now - good info, tryed afterwards to test ign bulb by grounding Dwire from alternator and it lighet up - su problem must be alternator that delivers 12v on D wire also when not running.

Yes, points to the alternator then, worth a dig about in that, could be something easy, if you do have a multi meter the diodes can be tested.

Just seen this on eBay, if the diode pack is faulty it would be a quick fix, check the alternator you have fitted matches.
