Although I don’t totally agree with mot exemption I have just got my stag into the daylight after 20 years resting so mot exemption will help while getting it roadworthy. I intend to mot it later. My question is my tax status is ok on the gov site but do I get any paper work regarding mot exemption?

So you don't believe your car is roadworthy but you need an exemption so that you can use it on the road until it is roadworthy?
Sorry but if I have read it correctly that is a disgusting attitude, and having now published your intention your insurers might withdraw your insurance, you simply cannot drive an unroadworthy car on public roads MOT'd or not.

Like you I have one that has been off the road for a few years, I've replaced all the brakes throughout so it stops fine, and a new rack fitted so it points fine, now working on the go bit under the bonnet. I don't have any glaring rust holes in the car, the paintwork is tired but all the lights and indicators work as they should including the new wipers.
Like you I want to drive the car to see if (what) anything else needs to be done, but I think I've covered the main bits and don't feel the car is unroadworthy. In fact when I get the five new tyres fitted to the rims that have just arrived I'll be able to do some longer runs.
Before that, once the new tyres are fitted, I want to replace the rear shocks and rear bushes, the front shocks/coils have been done. After that I'll get the tracking done as the new rack settings are estimated.
No I'm not going to be doing any long or high speed runs until then, and I'm comfortable with the car, I'm sure you probably have the same approach. At that point I will probably get an MOT or the MOT check done to see if there is anything I've missed.

Yes Roy. Exactly the way I was thinking going forward with my stag. You explained it better than I did. There’s only so much that can be done while car is stationary, about 95%, it’s needs a road test for the other 5%. Conundrum there. If you choose to MOT and it fails you shouldn't use it plus insurance would definitely be invalid. Restore/repair with brief road tests then get it MOTd with hopefully a pass bizarly keeps it more legal. The boys in blue could get it examined and declared unroadworthy if an incident occurred and faults were found so as I said....conundrum.Last edited by AJLC; 10 August 2021, 22:49.
