It is interesting that the new circlips from Peter are a very different design to the ones fitted to the reconditioned rack I bought five years ago.....

          August Bank Holiday! Pah!!

On Saturday I finished rebuilding the rack with new circlips from Peter at LDPart, reassembled it and refitted to the car. Put fluid in the pump, primed by hand, then the car wouldn't start. Remembering that I needed a new battery last year and that I didn't buy one, I put the battery on charge and shut the car up in that dark garage.

On Sunday I went to check the car, I'd a number of other projects to do, several of which needed the car. Started it, checked the steering. No power at all. Fully manual. Checked the fluid levels, okay. Drove along to my first port of call, hoping the steering would ease but it didn't. Parking was, er, interesting! Some deep thought ensued during which I decided that I must have re-assembled the spool valve 180º out so once again I shut the car in her dark garage.

Today I stripped the rack out of the car again (funny how it becomes easier when you've done it twice already this weekend) pulled off the spool valve, marked the outer and inner parts and then seperated them. Sure enough, the parts were wrong, so I spun the outer sleeve and refixed it. Spool valve back on the rack, rack back in the car, pipes conected, fluid filled. Pump primed, engine started. Hurrah! We have power steering again. The only thing wrong now is that the steering wheel is upside down :-(

Has a rack out 4 times. Still couldn't get it to work, but was able to get the rack out in mins. Spool valve was correct way round, but still no power. Rebuilt another spare one and that works OK.

Come on, be honest.. you enjoy it really, the sense of achievement is worth all that effort.

Mostly it's a sense of relief today since I'm using the Stag for my holiday which will be 550 miles starting on Sunday next, followed immediately by a bash up Prescott Hill Climb (hoping to do better than 60sec), then it's the Tour of Cheshire Historic rally followed by the Round Britain run (another 2,000 miles). I'm committed to about 3,000 miles in the next four weeks. But yes, if I didn't enjoy fixing things I wouldn't own a Stag!
