    Battery removal

When removing the power steering pump prior to battery removal, is it better to just remove the pump from its bracket, or the pump and bracket together from the chain case?

I remove both together. 3 bolts.

Yes, me too. And that's what it says in the ROM...

Me too, and by the way, it is on the head, not the chain case. I find I can ease it back and towards the wing, and hold it back with a bit of bent wire round the carb intake elbow. That keeps it out of the way while changing battery (or alternator if it is still in the original place). No need to disconnect power steering hoses.

Ditto. Just be careful not allow the power steering fluid to spill.

I bought some small elastic straps (12"). Really cheap on Flea Bay.

They make holding items in position much easier.

Also watch how much you tighten the bolts back afterwards.

Thanks for all the tips guys! That'll teach me to look at the ROM more often!

Which bolts EXACTLY do you remove to move the unit out of the way? Not really sure where to start and need to change the battery

It’s the three that hold the mounting bracket to the head (two are hiding beneath the lifting eye rib of the bracket). Once the three bolts and belt have been removed (don’t touch the PS pipes), the whole pump unit swings out of the way to enable the battery to be replaced. I usually wrap the whole thing in an old t-shirt to avoid damaging the wheel arch paint. Take special note of the comments above regarding fluid spillage and over tightening of the bolts on reassembly.

Its awhile since I did mine, but when you put it all back you need to pivot the bracket about one of the bolts in order to tension the belt.
