    Wake up stag

Engine spinning well now, now looking at fuel pump that doesn’t pump. 30 years ago if I didn’t start it for a week I would always have to knock the pump body to get it pumping, this time I’ve given it a few good taps but nothing. Taken it off and put power to the terminals but still nothing, had it to bits all nice and clean inside but motor end looks unserviceable. Is there anything to do or is it a new pump? It’s the original 1972 type.

You can get overhaul kits direct from Burlen.

Su Carburetters are The Worlds Sole Manufacturer of Genuine SU Carburettors, Fuel Pumps and Spares.

Just on observation - I thought the main spring in the overhaul kit was too strong - about 50% more than my existing spring (which I can only assume is the original). Considering the number of reports of flooding carbs after a fuel pup overhaul or replacement, I kept the original spring. I have no suitable pressure gauge to confirm the values.

Looking at mine it’s the main motor part that’s knackered not the valve end, it looks a non service part. It doesn’t run.

You get new points etc. in the overhaul kit. So long as the windings are OK you should be able to resuscitate it.

Progress. I thought the pump was a sealed unit until you advised me that you can get inside, so then I read the instructions !!! Once I cut the tape off all became clear. I cleaned the points and it pumped away after a push start at the bottom plunger thing. Trouble is the thick bit of black plastic disc that everything is mounted on is cracked in 2 places, can’t see this bit on rimmers repair kit, it’s the only bit I need. I suppose a bit of gorilla tape will be ok to reseal the body?
