New to the club

Hi to prevent boredom setting in during lockdown I bought a Mk 2 stag that had been standing for the last 27 years. I have now completely striped it and I’m busy collecting new parts for the rebuild. The car is now with AM Restoration having its bodywork repaired and painted. Engine is going to Robsport’s for full rebuild. I’m debating whether or not to change the Borg Warner 65 auto gearbox to a manual with overdrive. The last time I drove a Stag was in 1976 so have no idea how good or bad they are.I would value this forums opinions.

The autos are very "old slushbox era". Personally I like them just for that! However many prefer the manual o/d version, which can also have its issues, mainly the clutch operating mechanism and the OD from watching here...... There is a more recent auto box (Jag type ZF 4spd with torque convertor lockup) conversion around.

Biggest issue with the original autos is the gearing - 3500rpm at 70mph annoys some folk. Maybe Club members near you might take you out so you can judge for yourself? Whereabouts are you based?

Zf 4speed is a great thing on a stag.

Hi Steve

Clive Tait fitted the 4 speed ZF box to my Stag last year.

The return journey back home was as if I was in a completely different car!!
The difference Is amazing . Much better MPG as well.

I think I’ll rebuild it with a reconditioned BW65 and if I don’t like it swap it for the ZF. The idea of it being auto appeals to my wife so I’ll forget the manual idea.
