What a lot of trouble to go to ..............................

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TRIUMPH-STAG-G...item2a05eadf2f

He says in theadvert that its a MK1 stag made to look like a MK2 well if you look at the picture of the open door, he has gone to a lot of trouble fitting MK 2 doors

    Or maybe hes telling fibs

Another ringer or should I say rebodied, seems to be a lot about now, I beleive you can use the shell from a later car and use the ID from the older car providing you use a high percentage of the older car, but how much I do not know but I thought you would have to use a very high percentage.

Yes it is a MK2. The MK1 door lock is completely different ,but the MK 2 started production in 1973 so would not be tax exempt .

Door locks usually give the game away. Early Stags - up to the LD30000 series models - have a door striker plate. From approx LD30000 they were fitted with modern anti-burst locks. These have a staple welded to a small plate attached to the b-post, much like current cars. The lock plates attached to the doors are, accordingly, different. The early ones have the lock catch near the top and the newer ones have the catch near the bottom, as on the car that is the subject of this thread.

The doors are different, as are the b-posts.

100% a ringer ..... i find it shocking that there are so many out there !!!

If your gonna do it i think the best way is to stick a non age related private plate on the car..

              Thanks Dave,

I see now, my car has the large striker plate held by 3 C/S screws and has a locating pin sticking out. the com No is 24!!! built late in 73 so I suppose it is what is often called a mk 1 1/2 ! maybe.

Never seen those door catches on a 72 car as they where not used until 74, it is one of the first things I look at to verify a modified MK1, much like the one I saw for a certain TV Program where someone had gone to to trouble of fitting a Mk1 T/BAR and other things but the door catches and B post latchers where from a post 74 model advertised as a 72 car, but they had history for the last twenty years in the same family, but I should think this car was rung before they owned the car.

                  Same age as mine, Ian.

When looking for another Stag I went to seeone for sale in Taunton, Somerset. It looked stunning from about 20 feet in a dark metallic blue with cream leather seats. But, apart from the poor paint prep, this car had a Mk1 door on one side and a Mk2 door on the other. The seller got quite shirty when I pointed this out. I walked away.............

When I bought mine I spent about an hour poking and proding looking for rot and couldn't fault it, it had had bits done but done really well so it had to be the one. I spent the following day when I got it home looking even harder and all I could find was a tiny hole in the corner of the battery crate. I recently stripped it and had it painted and still no rot but the boot lid was full of filler over a big patch welded into the back edge, it was replaced with another lid. I don't mind doing anything mechanical to it, I used to do it for a living (Rootes dealer, showing my age) but I didn't what to get involved in welding and replacing panels.

There are lots of mixed up cars out there. Take my Project car for example. Its a Mark 2 body fitted with Mark 1 engine, dash, seats and T bar. Why? My first car was a genuine tax exempt mark 1 and that has been used as the donor for my replacement car and the best shell I could purchase in the summer of 2008 was a Mark 2. So, visually my project car will look like a Mark 1 except for the numberplate and if you open the doors. Does that matter to me, not a bit.

The downside is having to start paying road tax. Gordon Brown is not a popular person in this household as both the Stag and GT6 are 1973/74 andtaxable because of him:X.
