    Black Stags - Paint Code

The article in this months (September) SOC magazine by Peter robinson about paint colours & trims was very interesting. It did list Black as a factory colour, which is interesting as my Stag is Black. Is there any record of the colour code anywhere at all as need a little TLC on the paintwork & be usefl to know the actual colour & code used. Any information would be very much apprecaited. Thansk Andy

I would get it scanned for match by a paint supplier rather than relying on the code. I think I’m right in saying that no stags came out of the factory in black even though it was offered as an option.
Paul - 3 projects, 1 breaker - garage built and housing 2 white Stags. One runs, one doesn't

Even then be prepared for it to not quite match. Black is the very devil to match. I had my white Stag scanned and paint mixed according to the scan, it isn't quite the same as the paint on the car.....

A good paint shop will match any colour to perfection but then I used to match it rather than rely on staff.

I re sprayed the whole of my car black but would have no fear trying to match it again. Taxi black or Ford black I used.

Having said that, white is notorious for matching but should still be satisfactory, again depends on the eye.

What's the paint code on the chassis plate?
Would be interesting to know as I also believe no black Stags painted at the factory.

In this month's mag there is an article on paint and trim.
Black was a code 11, although there doesn't appear to be attached to any commission numbers, an additional comment says - not all the colours were used and not all the colours were used on a Stag. With no commission number againt that colour I assume therefore it either wasn't used or there's no firm evidence it was used.
If there is someone with original black perhaps they could let Peter know the details.

Sorry Andy, retired years ago. Glad to help with any advice though.

This is the reverse of a Uniroyal Tyre advert many years ago. A whole sheet showing blocks in black which you could choose from. All exactly the same of course but with different descriptions like dark black, very dark black, very off white, and umpteen others. All good fun.

                          Dear All,

Some confusion may have occurred due to a printer error (their typo I am afraid) on page 32 - the chart of all known Stag paint and trim colours used and when they were used. The second, smaller block of colours should have been headed 'Trim Colour' and not 'Paint Colour'.

Black was not offered as a paint colour, only a trim colour. I know of one, possibly two, black Stags painted at the factory - but they were specials purchased back by the factory as used cars from a local dealer and sprayed black as part of the project they were being used for. One was later released back into the public domain but the second one is a rumour only as I have never been able to trace it.

Basically, Stag & TR6 were both built and painted at Speke alongside Toledo. The paint was piped over a roadway from the paint mixing/storage room to the factory on a pipe bridge so they were limityed in the number of paints that they could store and distribute. One offs could be accommodated but their contracts with Holts for rattle cans was rather tenuous (if I could do a smiley face here I would !). But, there were no black Toledos, no black TR6s and no black Stags.

Black is a nice colour for Stag but the bodywork needs to be pristine for all the little blemishes not to show up badly (check out the engine bay photos of the car currently for sale on Ebay at £22k). Matt black would be useful to hide these blemishes but the overall impression may not be quite up to the mark. Having said that, I have a roller painted Landy which looks quite good - maybe not your £30k Stag though !

                          Peter
