    Hazard warning lights connection

I have just taken delivery of a 1975 N reg Stag and am new to the forum. The hazard warning lights do not work on it. The relay clicks but there is no light at all in the indicators. The turn lights work normally.

The loom going to the relay has four leads on it. The ones connected are green/white and solid purple but there are two more, green/black and purple/white which are not connected and covered with black tape. Could someone with a Stag fitted with hazard lights please look behind the parcel shelf to see whether these leads are connected. My Haynes manual is rather vague about this and they are not shown on the circuit diagram.

    Thank you
    Paul

    Hi, and welcome,

The switch contacts can get dirty. Could be worth pulling it out and pushing it in a few times to see if that cleans the contacts. It has been known to work.

      Thanks Dave

Looking at it in the dark just now I see that the lights do flash very dimly. I had assumed they were not working at all. I have pulled the unit in and out a few times and I wonder whether the wrong one has been fitted so I have ordered a replacement. I assumed that something was disconnected as the rear number plate lights did not work and I discovered that the bullet connectors by the nearside wheel arch were both disconnected. I just need to sort out a few things before I make friends with the car!

The hazards have their own flasher unit on the relay board.

And remember the hazard flasher is rated twice the wattage of the turn flasher.
4x21w for the hazard, 2x21w for the turn flasher. If someone has put a turn flasher in the hazard circuit (same mounting) you could get the fault you are experiencing

I was trying to fix an issue with my non flashing indicators t slow engine speed. As an an experiment, I swap the hazard flasher with the indicator one. The flashers both blinked off and on rapidly flashed but none of the lights blinked. In the end I was able to source another spare flasher. As mentioned by Alan they are rated differently.
Someone posted a great YouTube link " Search Churchill classics. Since yours are dim, maybe the hazard switch needs cleaning. Again the video is great.

If you do have to replace either flasher unit I would get the electronic 3 pin versions. You have to earth the 3rd pin but they flash at the required rate regardless of battery voltage and you can use LED bulbs or, like me, power trailer lights
              Got mine from EBay

Apologies for not having replied before now. I had subscribed to the thread but I haven't received any notification emails. Anyway, I think that the wrong unit has been fitted. I have ordered the right one - I did this before I saw Alan's post about the electronic version or I would have ordered that. If that doesn't help I will look at the video as suggested and clean the switch contacts. I have to say that the car hasn't lived up to expectations or the seller's description of it but I will go through the problems bit by bit and will hopefully end up with a good one. Clutch hydraulics next!

Edit - I have now found the notification settings for the forum!

Thanks for that. I have looked at the video and now understand the circuit. If the new flasher unit doesn't help I will investigate the switch.

I’m no auto electrician so my none flashing indicators have become quite a challenge. I did find the flasher relay with the purple live and green/yellow feed to the switch, although that seems at odds with the wiring diagram. I also found it odd that the hazard flasher switch does not seem to appear on the diagram at all. I have installed the replacement electronic relay, as suggested and will look for the second relay. This thread has been really helpful in my quest. Thanks.

The purple wire is indicating that you're looking at the hazard relay (purple is constant live via the Battery Fuse which is needed to keep the hazards working with ignition off). The hazard relay is normally mounted on the relay board behind the passenger parcel shelf. Normal indicator relay fed from a green (dark) wire (Ignition) fed from the Ignition Control fuse. Relay frequently found close to the steering column or possibly behind the dash.

I'm unsure if there's a diagram the OEM hazard wiring, but the Grampian Stag site may be helpful https://www.grampianstags.net/hazard.htm.

                            Good info…
My hazards stop working if the flasher unit drops out of the mounting.

As soon as it’s relocated they all work.
