    steering hose woes

    Hi all,

Slowely working through my Stag's jobs and nearly there with the steering system. However the simplest of jobs or so I thought for attaching new steering hoses has stumped me. The new hoses just do not appear to fit or at least the high pressure hose. I've got the hoses going aft of the engine mount and over the lower part of the lower steering shaft. I'm beginning to think they just do not fit. Any suggestions or recommendations on supplier's who provide hoses that should fit properly?

    Cheers all

Nope, I don't think they do fit, or at least not easily - sent my new ones back and got the old ones reconditioned. some other threads here about this, worth a search around.

Hi Wilf. Where did you get your swivel joint from that you incorporated into your high pressure hose? Thanks

Agreed, have a search, I had the same, managed to get them both to fit but they do need adjusting, one more than the other. If you compare the old to new you will see the issue where the angle of the new connection is different, makes fitting it pretty impossible as you can't angle the pipe to screw in.

A few slight tweaks in the vice will do it, just don't do them alll on the same pipe bend, spread them out, fitted perfect after that.

As these pipes have been made incorrectly for some years now, it is pretty depressing that the retailers still haven't got the manufacturer to bend them properly. It is a simple enough request.

I am in the USA so left hand drive. I don't know if the same fitting problems exist but I did not want to get repro hoses sent over only to have them require adjustments. I had a new set made up locally at an industrial hydraulics firm. They reused the fittings that attach to the rack and had a new pump fitting in stock. I told them that the high pressure hose needs to handle 900 lbs pressure but they told me that their hoses are rated for 5,000 lbs. I think that should work! Oh, and they were able to do the work while I waited. Twenty minutes later I was heading home after paying them an amount less than the cost from Rimmer.

It was fitted by my local "Pirtek" depot after discussions with them as to the best way to approach the issue (they had to cut off the original swaged ends, and so "lost" the original orientation. Worked well.

Fitted the hoses, got the best run I could, then tightened the swivel joint.

I fitted the available parts ok , just needed a bit of a fight. No tightening until the threads are all engaged.
Failing that , get the old ones remade as per previous posts.
Recall I did have a new one leak worse than an original once though

Just as an FYI. I fitted a LHD one from Rimmer and it was OK. Not perfect but with some small adjustments it worked out fine. However I did install it with engine out so that may have made it easier to get it right.

Thanks all, with a lot of bending and trial fitting I'm nearly there. A 1 hour job turned into a day. What a pallava ....

Someone I know bought a LHD drive one from the bros. No issues, I think I have to replace mine as I have a leak in control valve area. Having the rack out 3 or 4 times didn't help.
