Avoid gin before fitting.......................or invest in a laser light guide? Not sure if that would help, think it is probably down to the Mk1 eyeball.
You can give yourself a guide edge to work to by running a length of masking tape an inch too high along the car. If that is wonky then a few felt tip lines drawn along the tape should allow accurate positioning.
As you fit the tape smooth it down as you go to eliminate air bubbles under the tape.
I helped Lawrence whilst at Tony Whites place, what he done was put it as close as possible and stuck it on about couple of inches on one side.
Then he unwound it to the other side and had me direct him as to whether to go up or down. When it was just right he undid the backing while sticking it on slowly.
I was surprised it came out really good. When measured it was quite uniform. So two person job,
I found that the hardest thing was keeping things straight over the rear wheel arch where it goes down to a single line. If you pre cut it it’s hard to pull taught and keep aligned. for the other side I left in one piece and peeled back and cut the thick line it after I had it aligned and in place.
When I resprayed my car - many years ago - I actually sprayed the line on. So I first sprayed a gold band down the side, then masked where the line would be. As I was using masking tape I could have many goes to get it right. I then over sprayed the whole car in Mallard in the normal way. When the paint was still slightly tacky, I peeled off the masking tape to reveal the stripes. To my great surprise, it did work well. Also, like all jobs you do yourself, you can repair it easily yourself - for carpark door dents and the like.
After many years, my car has just been professionally re-sprayed at Wards. I did tell Mick about how I had done it first time round and got one of those "crazy customer" looks. I now have stuck on ones! I also park in the far corners of car parks and worry a lot.
