Speaker for Dashboard Stag Mk II

Hi all - this week's Stag problem (well, one of them) concerns trying to find a speaker to fit the dashboard panel - I've tried two 'shallow mount' speakers - A Phoenix Gold 5x7" and have a Vibe DB57-V4 to try. The Phoenix was much too deep and the Vibe is in a sealed blister pack and doesn't look much different in depth, but both promote that they are 'shallow'. The packaging on the Vibe says 49mm or 1.9" - the Phoenix wasn't just a couple of mm too deep it was question of no way would it possibly fit flush.

Before I rip open the packaging rending it impossible to return, does anyone know if the Vibe will fit (a friend found it suggested on the web for Stags, but Vibe themselves won't or can't confirm).

Or does anyone know what WILL fit and can you give me a link, please? I have found one on eBay (new speakers, not second hand)

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/282745258...6&toolid=10001

Over 4 times the price of the Vibe but specifically says for Stags. And is a faux-Stereo single speaker so presumably will be better. But before I make a choice, thought I’d consult!

    Thanks!

Greg - the speaker in your Ebay link will fit. I bought and fitted one about a month ago. Not very good bass response but i think this is due to the position rather than the quality of the speaker which seems very good.
They have separate Left and Right connections so can combine the front channels. from the box it is called 'Retrosound R-57 5"x7" Ultra thin' if you want to google it further.

I fitted two (2) of these in the dash and then two (2) 6" 3 ways in the rear cubby area. https://www.elite-electronics.com.au...axial_Speakers

Be aware that the heater box on a AC car is different from a UK car. We bought a speaker that many recommended a some years ago, but on our Federal car it would not fit. I enden up wedging it in between the heater and the dash, whereas others could bolt it in.

Why not consider a dual coil sub woofer mounted in the hood well or somewhere else suitable. Then fit two smaller speakers in front left and right? Then you will get good bass response but still get good stereo separation. I am going to give that a go.

Thanks for that Alan - I was 99% prepared to risk it, given that with the way it's advertised I'd have no problem returning it if it didn't fit! But good to know. I have a pair of speakers in the back that replaced the two originally there and they are fine to a point, with the roof up at least. But kind of feel like I need to crank the power up to 11 to get some good audio, which with the roof down is a bit anti-social. So I'm hoping that with that speaker (or indeed any other fitted in the front) that there would be a better experience without attracting to much attention - well more than a Stag does through looks and the sound of the exhaust!

I think I'll just bite the bullet unless anyone comes up with a better idea. The kind of faux stereo effect may be worth paying for on its own - though I imagine is best intended for those with only one original speaker. Do you have rear speakers as well?? Do the two channels at the front link with the rear, if so?

The radio/stereo is Pioneer DEH-S420BT I don't seem to have a note of the speakers to hand and the car is at an off site garage, but good quality.

Hi Hughesy - thanks - though I am a bit surprised you fitted two in the dashboard. Presumably you had to cut a different way to fit them in? I'm OK for rear speakers - as I replied to Alan just looking for a more kind of surround effect (I don't mean try surround sound, but to give a bit more volume in the front with the top down without making an external row.

Had pondered it - only had the Stag since July and I'd HOPED that my only expenses in the first months would be to improve the sound , replace the radio for a BT stereo and the tiny speakers in the back - little did I know.... Spent more time with the car off the road than on it, one way and another. Summer's gone (the apology for summer we had this year) and no time to really enjoy top down touring with some decent sounds. I have a Bose Sound System in my 'proper' car and enjoy that, for the Stag I'm just content to have a reasonable volume and average sound - I'll drive her mostly with the top down - which means the winter months won't see me out and about much. I'd rather avoid adding further speakers in the foot well and although I must admit I'd not thought about the idea of a sub woofer in the hood well it may be an idea in the future IF I can get the car to be 95% reliable and use her regularly. If the catalogue of niggling things continues I may have to cut my losses and sell here and maybe buy another! All of which is to say I'll spend on the essentials to cure the other issues (hood mechanism problems, fuel leak and starting problems - replaced the entire ignition system, coil, distributor and leads, had the carbs rebuilt - yet still have problems with stalling and restarting with an Automatic box, wiper motor seized, et, al) before I embellish the features - and spend time doing so. I'm not out of love with her yet, but do want to know that I can depend on her for regular use and for long distances before I can be comfortable that my needs are met! When that time arrives then enhancing the sound system properly may come along, in which case it would be good to know how your changes work out!

I assume you mean Air Conditioning by AC? Didn't know that had been an option though I have heard of people adding it to Stags. Mine is a UK car, however - so should be OK with the one on eBay.

Greg, even purchasing a classic car at the top price range, most still seem to need sorting before they can be relied on. Possibly more so with a Stag. But I wish you good luck in getting it all sorted. PS I can help with advice on your hood problems if you like.

+1 on that.. yes Aircon heaters are slightly bigger so even less room up there. Mine’s a low profile retrosound as mentioned and is wedged in too, I even had to loosen the dash to get it in..

If you are happy wedging the speaker in then stick with the cheap and cheerful one from Amazon - the Vibe. I chose to grind away some of the plastic around the edge to get it to push further backwards but it didn’t make much of a difference.
Sound quality isn’t great but I’m planning on adding something with more bass pointing into the footwell from next to the heater.

The speaker is it state fits the tstag, which I think you something I’d like 7 x 4, sound quite terrible and distort very easily. the reasons they fit this is there so narrow, the fact the magnet is so small. Which back in the 1970s wasn’t really an issue, that was then, modern sounds we are used to today, it doesn’t cut the mustard. You’ve got a half decent brand like vibe, if you get this to fit the sound will be a lot better. You’ve gone down the right route of getting a branded type speaker rather than just one that fits. I’m not too sure how much room, depth, there is for a speaker to fit but the ones like this https://www.thompsonsltd.co.uk/all-p...pyle-pair.html might be a bit smaller than the ones you’re trying to fit, but just a case of look at the dimensions.
Thats the One I was going to get, Pyle, for the stag centre speaker, but I had one spare 6x9 speaker left over from another installation. It doesn’t fit very well and sits proud, in fact it looks quite awful even worse with speaker grill. I might try and Mount it a bit lower, there is a trade-off with how it looks to the sound quality. There again my stag does have 14 speakers, 6 amps, 2 digital sound process, Dolby digital EXII surround sound decoder and blue tooth 5. Just in case I get board with the mechanical sounds.
