    Inlet valve clearances

    Hi all,

I seem to have mixed info on the clearances for the cylinder head inlet valves on the manuals I have.

Stag by Triumph Repair Operations Manual & Autobooks Stag Owners Workshop Manual both say 0.008 to 0.010 inch.

Triumph Service Training notes says 0.006 to 0.008 inch.

Obviously getting spot on 0.008 inch would be the simple ideal but that’s not always going to be that easy.

Does anyone have any experience of which might be correct?

    Many thanks in advance.

I would go for the 0.008 to 0.010 which is the usually published/accepted figure, and 0.016 to 0.018 for the exhaust.I have always used them, and I know specialist Stag engine builders who do the same.
Perhaps it was later decided to give a bit extra to allow for "Settling in".
I wonder how many other people have noticed the smaller clearance setting in the ROM?

      Hi Lingen,

Thanks for your advice. All the manuals seem to agree on the exhaust figures. If I recall correctly the inlet figures you suggest were the ones I went with about seven years ago. However, as I am about to check clearances again I thought it worthwhile asking. Thanks again for your reply.

Interesting; on page 14 of the Engine Training Notes it states the correct clearance is 0.008" - 0.010".

Looks like a typo on page 13.
        The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137

I have always tried to achieve 8 thou & 16 thou.
seems to give a quiet result when warm & at idle.

Thanks Drew, got to love the quality control in their paperwork as well as assembly line.

Thanks Jeff, I am pretty confident that I went with 8 for the inlet when I was shimming the heads on the rebuild some years back. There has been a bit of gap shrinkage in them but all within working tolerances. Cannot recall the exhaust but after 7 or so years running they are all identical so that was satisfying to see.
