Water leaks

How on earth does water get INSIDE the tonneau cover box section?

I've spentthe last two weeks trying to sort out water leaks in my car, and I'm nearly there - down from at least 12 sources to just 2 ! And now,I've just spent a very frustrating 2 hours sitting in the back of my totally gutted (bit like me!) car in the pouring rain trying to identify the remaiing sources.

To my astonishment, water is coming OUT of the box section of the tonneau cover through the hole on the bottom.

The seal on the bottom of the hood rail seems to be sitting ok and I've sealed the gaps between the 3 chrome covers on the top of the tonneau. The skirts of the hood are reasonably deep and cover all the chrome on the tonneau cover and I've recently applied Renovo to the hood to stop it soaking up water.

So, how on earth can rain water get inside ? - Has anybody else experienced this?

    Cheers

    Julian

I'm feeling unwanted. Just 4 or 5 more new posts and this thread will drop off the front page without a single reply

I thought this phenomenon (which seems like water going upwards !) was so unusual that someone must have come across it before.

I can't believe I've discovered a problem on a Stag that nobody has ever experienced before - If I have, can I have a prize?

    Cheers

What hole, do you mean the drain hole? Does it matter if you have the drain tube fitted?

            Hi Chris

It's a bit hard to explain, but it's the main metal body of the tonneau itself- RS 1373 cover assembly in Rimmers pic attached.

There are two holes - one either side - about 3/4" diameter and they dump the water directly into the hood stowage area. They are about 2" further in than the drain channel - that we've been discussing recently

On the plus side, when I completely stripped out my interior, I had about 12 points of water ingress - of varying difficulty to pinpoint. I'm now down to just 2

            Cheers

Ah, I think I know which hole you mean. The metal cover is reinforced by a pressed steel rib (similar to underside of boot lid). If water is coming out there, it must be going in through the stainless trim. Try a bead of clear silicone sealant along the trim edges.

Am sure you have checked this but at least it will bring your post back to the top

where the Tonneau cover rubber seal sits in the channel. This channel runs forward to just bellow your chrome hard topsecuring points. If you were to remove these chrome bits you will see that this pipe will be joined to a drain point in the channel. My pipe runs down and comes out bellow the car thus stopping any water collecting bellow the chrome cover and in the channel. See the arrow the pipe is joined to the channel drain point and runs out of the car underneath

                    Hi Dave, Chris and Malcolm,

Sorry for the lack of earlier reply - I've been handling a leak crisis of a different nature for the last couple of days :shock:A heating oil flood inside the house - not nice & not easy to sort out and, what's worse, stopped me working on the Stag :X

Anyway, Dave - I seem to have sorted it but I'm not sure quite how :?I think it was like Chris said but I can't quite remember now.

Chris, sorry my explanation was so bad originally ! and Malcolm, thanks for your thoughts - it's interesting that this topic has come up again on a different thread 'tonneau seals' so I'll post something there.

                    Cheers Guys,

                    Julian
