    Bent Hood

This picture shows the main support hoopfor the hood. The wooden template in the picture I use to check for any distortion, and as you can see the frame vertical is bent forwards and isnowhere near the template. They are usuallyless than 1/4 inch outat most.

When this part bends the rear catches will not work regardless of adjustment. The only answer is to bend the frame back into its correct position.

    Hi Chris

That's really interesting. Is there any way to tell if it's bent without your template? - I can't get my catches locked

Yes, if the catches cannot be adjusted so the catch just flips to locked position your frame is bent.

Sorry if thats obvious and no helpbut I cant easily describe how to fix it here. Needs a demo. Maybe I should consider bringing a frame along on National Day to answer such questions?

How about a video demonstration posted on here ?, it could be the first of many. Some fiddly jobs on the Stag could be made easier using such demos.

          hi all.

just thought i wouldadd this as i have the same problam.

my hood only lockson 1 side and is a right pig to undo when putting the hood back up.the other hook is about an inch out

Q?. does this mean my hood is bent or just out of line and need to be adjusted?

          regards Lyndon

Hi Lyndon, probably yes, the frame is bent. The catches are adjustable by a small amount, up/down and sideways, but this is really only enough for initial adjustment on a new frame. Most frames are bent and need to be straightened. Try loosening the screws right off then adjust the catches to see if that works; if not it will need removing from the car and straightening.

You say one side is an inch out, that is a lot; something is getting trapped (check the torque springs are in place). Some frames have several parts twisted out of shape, and really need to be replaced by a recon frame.

I use a tool made from a long piece of welded angle to give enough leverage to apply to the frame. They can bend either way, so you need to examine it to see which way it goes.

I can fix it for you if you can't do it, although it will mean a longish drive down

I will PM my phone number if you want a better explanation?

Chris looking at your picture and jig/template i take it the J bar is ok as it appears to be touching your reference points?

I take that the vertical section that is way out of wack should be touching the jig at the reference points?

Any info gratefully received as my hood frame is getting very close to the top of the pile, Raoul (Marco polo) has supplied me with some templates for the frame so will be using these when the time comes.

A video demo would help allot of us with bent frames:shock:

Oh dear, pressure is mounting;there are a lot of calls for a video! I dont have a Camera, and if I didmaking a proper video takes up a lot of time and skill that I dont have.

Right, to explain the picture: yes the vertical arm (main hoop) should be touching the template where the arrowsare marked. Thisframe is bent forwards too far, butsome frames are bent back. This J leg is OK; it is not attached to the rear hoop, but sometimes, when the main frame is straight butrear catch is not in the correct position, the J leg is to blame; these can get bent too!

                    Hi Chris,

Would you be willingto PM me your email address, I'd like to send you my templates, they will need to be resized to scale and printed. I think it might be an interesting exercise to comare them against your wooden profile gauges. My templates are also for the hoop behind the B post and the J legs.

                    Cheers Raoul

Well done Chris, the template idea is excellent. I think that I have a distorted hood too. I don't know if this would work, but could you add an attachment with an actual size duplicate/tracing of the wooden template on a piece paper. Assumming it will go on an A4 paper, then we unfortunates can print out the page and make our own templates. Will that work?

                      Regards

I could trace it on some paper together with a ruler (so you can check it is 1:1 scale) then scan it in. I will see if I can do that for you.

I will try to email it to SOC members who PM me their address.
