I’m agonising. My dear old Stag has just the odd problem, or two and my “manager” is keeping a keen eye on the accounts. She (the Stag) has, amongst other things, a dodgy offside rear wheel bearing, a dodgy near side U/J and a teensy little clatter in the diff. She provides her own soundtrack driving along the road. My first thought is of course new CVV drive shafts and a refurbished Diff but oh the cost, and based on this thread I’m not entirely sure I trust the quality of the available options either. So, do I bite the bullet and buy new shafts, then save up for the diff or try rebuilding/refurbishing? I’d really welcome your advice.
U/J is an easy fix. Wheel bearing is another matter. I do have a few spare rear shaft/hub assemblies and you are welcome to borrow one until you are in a position to upgrade. Diffs can go on for a long time; it depends on how noisy it is.

I'm a bit confused "new CVV drive shafts I’m not entirely sure I trust the quality of the available options either." what exactly do you mean ?
All components have issues whether OEM originally from Triumph (it is their hubs and stub axles which are now showing propensity to fail) but in their favour nearly 2 generations after they were first fitted, or other manufacturers. There are NEW hubs being made the same specification and sold by Moss for TRs and given they are shared between the "Innsbruck" suspension cars TRs Stags and the large Triumph saloons, I would think the same spec is available for Stags maybe Rimmers.
Their original quality has been good enough for nearly 50 years so unless you plan living a couple of lifetimes the most cost effective way to safeguard your missus and yourself from a collapsing hub or breaking stub axle is replacing like for like. As for alternative offerings a listing of hubs and driveshafts from off the TR Register Forum where the hub and stub axles are under discussion is outlined here.
To be clear all these pricings and availability are for TR hubs and parts, but as a Stag owner I'd be picking your choice of supplier and ask them will the hub fit Stags, surprised if not, they are the same system.
TR GB currently has Part Number: TKC853/CV – ‘pair of half shafts with constant velocity joints and uprated rear hub bearings’ currently at £925.00 Exc. Vat. They also sell a reconditioned hub but this is about new replacement hubs.
Moss Europe also shows a reconditioned hub on their web site but also sell new hub units under part number: 402347 at £260.40 each but currently have none in stock and on back order. I phoned them last week and was told that the person making them was on holiday and they hope to begin making them again soon. I telephoned the London branch and was told they’ve stopped reconditioning them and now only sell new, made in house units. Moss also sells a pair of CV Joint, driveshaft & hub under part number: TKC853CV for £1,109.20
Revington TR make their own uprated hubs under part number 137496-1 at £466.16 plus VAT each.
Classic Driving Developments make their own uprated hubs for £380 each plus VAT.......(Stag supplier)
Bastuck (Germany) also sells a replacement hub under their part number D100TR6 for 360,47 Euros.
*Goodparts in America sells their own uprated CV jointed Axle/Hub Assembly at $1,198 (wire wheel version but options there) but shipping may be expensive.
*The Dennis Vessey & Co ones with Quaife bearings suggested in the forum post had the rights sold to Racestorations under part number AXL104-WW and for wire wheel use has a cost of £665 each plus VAT.
Because of the previous outlined Hub failures both here and on the TR forum I would NOT recommend replacing hubs with reconditioned units from ANY supplier. The *Goodparts and *Dennis Vessy units are very high quality and between them probably account for the most TR racers in use with IRS cars, this may mean beyond what you would run on the road.
Your dodgy U/J should be easily sorted by a local garage for small money, and the diff rebuilt by a Stag or TR specialist for reasonable money., more reasonable if the diff is reusable and just requires small inner part replacement...more if the crown wheel and pinion need replacing. No information where you are on your posting (why not give a general area Leicestershire or wherever, then people can suggest local services to you).
Well, Dave and Micky thank you both so much. Just great. I will follow up all you have said. Hugely helpful. Oh yes and I’m down in Devon Micky. Regards
I have the CDD a hubs and CV jointed shafts and I have to say their quality is 100%.
I’ve no connection with CDD at all but other parts they make for the Stag such as updated front hubs and bearings are equally well engineered and somewhat better than the original parts.
Well as a very new member of SOC I’m just so impressed with the support from this Forum. Dare I say “a real triumph”. My problem posted just yesterday is already looking considerably smaller today. A huge thanks to all but particularly DJT for his generosity.

I have CDD hubs on all four corners, plus their CV driveshafts, and concur their quality of materials, manufacture & design. I've also used their kit of parts to replace the rear trailing arm studs, which made the job very straight forward.
As a matter of interest, why would you spend around a grand for CV driveshafts when, from the same supplier, you can get new, uprated u/j driveshafts for half the price?
I found a guy in So. California who reconditioned my hubs for 150$ each. He even swapped out the staked part and replaced with a shaft which can use a reusable UJ. He tests for cracks and replaces thr bearings. One on my flanges had snapped. I bought some bits off Tony White to convert the complete shaft so it uses reusable UJ.s. Planning ahead for Stag .no 3.
Coz although they are new “ slippy” original type driveshafts if they are being mated to the “old” original Triumph hubs that is the motoring equivalent of roulette !
Every year these 50 year old components scream ENOUGH ! If they were on a plane they would be “life’d” and replaced with new units before they broke.
A broken driveshaft will damage the underside of the car but likely not hurt you, a broken stub axle or a fractured hub will allow the wheel to depart the car or if you are unlucky tuck underneath and roll the car. We have examples of that happening on TRs, good experience to miss. Tick - Tock.
