    Pitted Heads

    Hi Folks,
I submitted an enquiry earlier about pitted heads and how to repair/fill them and received advice from a number of members which i am grateful for, but I have also had a suggestion from a friend that I should use Aluminium solder applied with a blowtorch. Has anyone used this method or has an opinion on the likelihood of success with this method.
    Regards,

The heads act as a massive heat sink that apparently makes even welding difficult, so I doubt that would work.

Agreed. The aluminium head sinks a huge amount away and a propane or propane/oxygen torch just wouldn't be able to keep up. Thr aluminium solder adverts on the internet are amusing/misleading.

The chap that did my heads last time used TIG and the results are superb.

Many thanks for the advice folks, I delayed replying in case any other member wanted to contribute, however soldering is clearly not an option, so back to my previous advice.

If the pitting is not that severe, you already started it is not affecting the fire ring area, and is only where the heads sit over the water ways in the block, which I suspect is the case, then don't worry about it. Clean them up and refit them. Most of the Stag heads I have seen have at least some corrosion in those areas, indeed the ones on my car have quite deep pitting above the "closed" water ways and as far as I am aware cause no issues. Just make sure you use a good quality Anti-freeze/corrosion inhibitor which is changed in accordance with the manufacturers (of the coolant) instructions. My preference is for "Pink" OAT which lasts 5 years and whenever I change it comes out as clean as when it went in, never any sign of contamination. Others stick to the original "Blue" non-OAT and change every two years - some every year which I personally think is a bit OTT., but your car your choice.
