    Headlights no beam pattern

Hi all, I have purchased a set of headlights from a well known parts supplier, fitted and wired via relays. I went to my local tyre depot to have the setting checked. When they put the beam setter on they said there is no beam pattern, first on the outers which are dip H1 then the inners which are main H4 as per wiring diagram. Changing the bulbs made no difference( different brand). The H1 lamps are Neolite stamped and the H4 are Autopal stamped. Anyone any ideas please, ta

Had exactly the same issue myself. In my case, it was cured by fitting bulbs from a "known" brand - in my case Philips. Seems as though you have reflector issues too.

I thought the outer are H4 and the inners H1 - I changed my inners to H4 too as I have the 4 headlight conversion.
        this may explain the problem….

Stags came from the factory with 4 x H1 headlights. The beam patterns of outer and inner were different: outers = dip, inners = main. With main beam selected all four are on. Many will have been modified in some way during the past 50 years.

H1 bulb has no internal dip beam pattern,I presume that the original H1 dip Headlamp units had internals to give the pattern, your new ones may not?

As noted above normally the H4 are on the outer position as they give the dip pattern (and main if you wire it as well) and H1 inners for main

As per my post #7, H4 was not used on Stag. The difference between the inner and outer H1 light unit is a metal shield which gives a different (dipped) beam pattern. These are possibly unavailable new any more, which is why at least one main supplier is selling kits with H1 inners and H4 outers.

Look at the wiring diagram. 4 headlights, 4 filaments. If H4 had been used on the outers, there would be 4 headlights, 6 filaments.

Like many, my car has been modified and has 4 x H4 light units fitted, which are wired through relays. They give excellent illumination.

Well, that should be a cheap and simple fix. I like cheap and simple fixes.

I thought all UK Stags came with 4 x H1 as OE, which are single-filament lamps.

My '75 Stag had a nearside crusty outer reflector, hence reduced light output, and no beam pattern from the offside outer. On investigation, the offside outer lens/reflector unit had 'H4' moulded on the lens glass, and an H1 adapter plate brazed on at the rear to take an H1 filament! No wonder no beam pattern.

I bought 2 x new units from a local supplier; these came with H4 lamps. Some wiring, relays and fuses later, and to make use of the H4 twin-filaments, I will have a standard dipped beam outers only, and all four lamps on for main beam (outers - 2 x H4 twin-filament and inners - 2 x H1 single filament).

So, the lesson from this is to check that your headlamp units and H1/H4/H-whatever lamps are compatible.
