    Carburettor needle height adjuster

Another carburettor puzzle. When dismantling my carbs, there was nothing holding the little brass needle adjusting screw device in the dash pots, apart from its own o-ring. But in a recent thread a star washer was mentioned? Is that the normal way to retain the adjuster and the needle? There is a star washer in the rebuild kit that could possibly fit, but it does seem like a tight fit and also that it could score the inside of the dash pot itself. Looking on the Rimmers blow-up, there is no sign of any star washer. Anyone know the correct way of assembling these dashpots? I could just rely on the o-ring as before. That did seem to work fine for many years!

Yes, the star washer should be there as it prevents the needle slipping up the shaft.
Its a tight fit, it could score I suppose but mine seem fine.

Strange its not on the Rimmer picture, the screw is also missing..

Thanks Terry for confirming and thanks MandM for the picture. I certainly do not have that type of start washer in my Zenith kit. See below. Also there are 4 of them which is a bit of a clue! No wonder it was tight. Not sure where I get hold of the correct star washers?

I was always worried about scoring. but in my case the dash pot has lots of room to freely move. some folks use sand paper around a dowel to clean up. I didn't bother. but then again if did reuse an old star washer

            Mike,

Are those washers for the starter disc housing screws?

              Dave,

Yes I think they are. I used the originals as they were still in good nick.

I like your diagram. I dismantled the valves and it only dawned on me when re-assembling that there are two possible positions for the circular plate on the shaft. So had to work out which holes connected to what! Looks like I got it right.

                Sujit,
It was your thread that alerted me to the fact that there should be a star washer. So thanks for that.

I suppose for pics of the star washer one could also look at "Carburettor Tips and Tricks" in the Technical Section

Just in case anyone ever puts the valves together 180 deg out they will suffer from very poor starting from cold.
Car will take ages to start.
Once warm, ie later that day, it will start on the first turn.
                        Ask me how I know?
