    I've been a twit

Just replaced cam shaft andabout to secure it to the sprocket when tinkle, tinkle the locking plate disappearsdown the timing chain cover; much swearing ensued!

Can anyone suggest a simple way to retrieve the thing? I guess it’s either removed the timing chain cover or the sump, which is simplest?

    Any guidance very gratefully received.

    With thanks

    Mark

    Hi Mark

Go Halfords or similar and get an extend able magnet which will hopefully retrieve this item for you!

It looks like an aerial but with a little magnet on the end.

The Total petrol garages were selling them a couple of weeks ago.
      Might still be....

And next time stuff a rag down the hole beneath the sprocket to catch any loose items. I know it is being wise after the event, but....................

When I removed the left hand exhaust downpipe from my Stag I found a 3/4" open/ring spanner!!. That pretty much persuaded me that the "rebuilt" engine in the car I'd bought needed rebuilding again!:?

Did the "free" spanner ever got used?

It had a certain patina but it's in my tool box now.

Did exactly the same thing last summer. Managed to fish it out with a bit of hook shaped wire. Had to take the timming chains covers off in the end anyway to get the sprockets back on. :?

                      Thanks Des

Is it relatively easy to get the timing chains covers off? i.e. will I need to dismantle half the engine to do this?

                      with thanks

Not as difficult as I thought Mark...and I'm no expert! Took quite a while sliding an old feeler guage between the sump and timing chain cover gasket to break the seal, and then take off the covers. Found the cover gaskets had leaked quite a bit (3 gaskets I think) so useful replacing those.
