Exhaust - sound - stainless vs mild steel

had all stainless except for rear pipes between dampers and end pipes. Sound were awesome. Now i changed remaining mild steel pipes with stainless and sound has changed a little with a "high pitch knickering" - i consider ordering mild steel instead

anyone have experienced something similar ?

I remember this coming up years ago and the reason was reckoned to be that the stainless exhausts are thinner metal. So the high pitched clacky sounds come through the walls of the exhaust more easily. I too noticed that when moving to SS but the good news is the effect lessens over time. I presume the inside of the exhaust get coated with combustion deposits which deadens the sound.

Your case might be slightly different as you say it is only the rear pipes have been changed. Did some of the old wide bore rear pipes have sound deadening wool in them? I'm sure someone will know..

I have a tinkling noise from my stainless system.
it’s got the 316 stainless downpipes & Mr. Harts sports silencers and standard stainless crossovers with a big bore stainless tailpipe.
would like to get rid of the tinkling noise, as it’s a bit like pinking….but it’s not.
it also ‘tinkled’ before it had 316 downpipes & hart sport silencers though.
probably needs a bespoke thick wall system making up.
was thinking that a pair of mikalor clamps for the crossover pipes with a welded tube might be a better solution to the standard fiddly hanger arrangement.

I bought mine from Len, really good exhause, SS. Can't remember the make but it really sounds sporty since I tuned the carbs. When I took ths Stag down the A40 for a test it sounded awesome.

          Julian......your Stag sounds really good.

When running on 8 cylinders, most stags do sound great

ISTR that someone said the problem with most SS exhausts nowadays is that they don't have the heatshield fitted to the top of the silencers, allowing more resonance from the boxes. I have thought about making and fitting heatshield to mine to see if it makes any difference but I haven't yet.

Yes Julian, but the Double 'S' ones I bought from The Brothers don't....and although I can cut and shape the stainless steel, and I have a MIG welder that would do the job and the welding skill to be successful, I need to buy stainless MIG wire and get the energy to crawl under the car, take to exhaust off again and do the job.

I still haven't finished rebuilding that rear wheel hub.....

I dont think fitting a heat shield would make any difference to the sound of the exhaust

Yes it does…. The misfire from superheated fuel may have disappeared

The original heatshields went down to the seam …. Some are not that deep.

Presume you were aware of the likley quality from that source?
BTW, I think they are the only source of off the shelf 316 ss downpipes though. Still made to the ‘short’
                          pattern’ though!

ATB for 2022 & rear hub repairs. At least your not fitting a grands worth + of snake - oil…oops I’ll get me coat

okay here experiment - my issue were rear pipe between silencers and end pipe 'upgraded' to stainless and tinny sound !

                            video 1 - with SS
video 2 - with SS and some tectyl/dinitorl on 50 cm of surface on each pipe
