    Head removal after 25 years.

These photos popped up on my 'Google Memory Feed' (or whatever you want to call it), yesterday.
Was not a very pleasant memory..
I have the cars full history, so I know the heads had not been removed for 25 years/135,000 km.
I did nearly all of those km. Was a daily driver for 8 years. Aside of a sheared jackshaft when I decided to race it at Phillip Island and a hill climb event (Morwell Victoria) it never missed a beat on the street , even with the AC on in 42 degree days here. Engine and transmission was just then (well) rebuilt from an English car specialist when I bought it in 1992.
Car was unadulterated and extremely original. Previous well heeled 2nd owner had it for 14 years. He was a architectural engineer. Didn't do his own work on the car. The English car specialist he took it to in those 14 years had charged him 15,000 pounds on maintenance, service, rebuilds etc. during that time.
Cars total current mileage is 355,611 km. c 220,000 miles.
The car's now a garage princess while I rebuild everything (slowly). Probably 80% done.
I dropped a rebuilt spare TV8 engine in it. The head damage (I caused trying to remove the heads) on the original engine has since been beautifully repaired and the heads back together. Wrapped in plastic until I eventually get round to the bottom end; which (aside of some studs still stuck in the block), is in pretty good shape.
It took me a few days of moving the heads a few millimetres at a time.
I discovered in this strip down the engine had a copper shim in each bank when it was rebuilt (1990) 2 years before I bought it in 1992. Brick layers chisel came in handy and I did place the chisel in between the metal plates shown.

    Happy New Year.

You used a chisel to remove the heads?

Yes, the only way I could see to start the heads moving.
Tried many other ways first with zero result.
Started with a brickies chisel first. Then with some long thin pieces of sheet metal in between the chisel. Then a small regular chisel, then the thick chisel shown.
Despite the photo I always had the chisels in between pieces of thin (and thick) metal to protect the block and head.
The frustration after several days meant I got careless and pried the LH head in the wrong spot; the pieces of metal didn't protect the water jacket unfortunately..

I didn't wildly bash the regular chisels in between the gap. After I could get thin pieces of sheet steel in as a protective barrier, I was very careful to protect the head and block edges by using leverage and light taps and 4-5 different thicknesses of chisels and several different thicknesses of protective metal.
